Red Line accident

Was sitting in the car and reached for something, my foot pushed on the gas pedal while in park. The engine raced to 7K on the RPms just past the red line. Of course I stopped it as soon as I realized it. Will this do any damage to the engine? I know what an ***.

Re: Red Line accident

As long as its not a frequent happening I dont think it would matter much.. After all ..what the rev limiter is there for..

Re: Red Line accident

Yup. The rev limiter would keep it from going any higher.. it would sort of "bounce" off the max rpm the computer allows.

Don't be too hard on yourself.. we've all done stupid things. I had an 86 Accord that was built before some engineer got the bright idea to put a switch on the clutch. I would occassionally turn the key to start the car.. in first gear.. and get a nice little lurch.

The VQ engine that's in our G35's has been around for awhile, and it's quite a bulletproof design. Redlining it every now and then isn't going to hurt it noticeably, though I wouldn't make a habit of going past 6k every time the light turns green.

Just don't hold it there all day. I have a friend who fell asleep in his running Olds 442 in a parking lot. His foot floored the gas. No rev limiters back then I guess. He was awaken by the sound of the motor exploding. The Olds burned to the ground.

Re: Red Line accident

This engine is bullit proof. I did something the other day that was kind of neat. The last day of school at my daughters High school and I thought do a nice long burn out to show off to the High Schoolers. Well I rev it up let the clutch go and do a nice long, silent (no squeal) burn out. The problem was it sounded kind of funny because the rev limiter kept cutting in and out. Both my daughter and her friend said it sounded real funny. Oh well, I guess I'm not that cool any more.
