HP rating

Is the VQ 3.5 hp rated at 280 and 298? Or is the new SAE standard going to drop the ratings for HP and torque?

I know, the reason I ask is that honda is gettng whacked with the new ratings standards..

rsx type s was 210 now 201
TL was 270 now 258
RL was 300 now 290

So in 05 the VQ engines for the G were 280 and 298.
Is that changing for 06 with the new sae rating? Or is Infiniti already using it? I know the 06 M35 is advertised with 280 hp.

Some car makers like chevy saw the ratings go up on some engines.

Not sure about Nissan/Infinitis....there may be some variance in #'s but you can bet that whichever system that the engines are measured by, the actual power and torque won't change.

The 05 6MT VQ is known by Nissan/Infiniti has the "Rev-up" motor. It has slight mechanical differences that increase it's power to 298hp/260tq compared to the 5AT motors which are rated at 280hp/270tq. The Rev-up motor trades some low to midrange power for more topend HP.

The basic differences between the Rev-up motor and the 280hp are:

1) Revised lower intake manifold which improves higher rpm breathing....at the expense of low/midrange power
2) Variable cam timing on the intake cams
3) Beefer connecting rod bolts that improve high rpm operation/reliability
4) A 7,000rpm limter vs the 6,600rpm limiter.

Why didn't Nissan/Infiniti use the Rev-up motor in all Gs? The reason is probably because the Rev-up motor mated to a 5AT would feel lethargic around town because of the reduced low to midrange power. The 6MT has tighter spaced gears (read: more torque multiplication) therefore it allows the car to enter it's higher rpm powerband quicker.

Don't get too caught up in the new SAE rating system. All the cars that are getting their power reduced are still making the same power they did previously. The 06 258hp Acura TL still makes the same wheel hp as the 05 270hp TL. The only difference is the new system says that the flywheel hp is 258hp, not 270hp rating of the old system.

Will Nissan/Infiniti have to rerate the power of some their motors? Probably. It's a known fact that Nissan has had "funny math" when rating the power of various VQ35s in the Maxima, Altima, and G35. The 02 Altima rated at 240hp actually made the same whp as the 02 Maxima with 255hp. The 03 G35 sedan rated at 260hp made nearly the same whp as the 280hp 03 G35 coupe. Likewise the 03 G35 coupe made the same whp as the 287hp 03 350Z. From the whp numbers I'm seeing with the 05 298hp-300hp G35/350 Rev-up motors, I'd say they're putting out closer to a crack over 290hp assuming a 16% drivetrain loss to the 6MT/accessories.
