Also, should I buy a 2005 or 2004 with 20K miles and initial cost is most important to me? Would the performance be that different?
Could I mod to offset the difference in performance?

The price you pay will depend on your region. Check edmunds.com to get an idea of what other's are paying. There's no simple answer. Try Grubbs Infiniti (grubbsinfiniti.com) for a comparative quote if you don't like the prices you're getting quoted locally.

The second question doesn't make sense. I'm going to guess it asks, "Should I buy a 2005 or 2004 (with 20K miles) if initial cost is most important to me." Definitely yes. If initial cost is most important you won't find a 2005 for anywhere near the price of a similarly equipped used 2004.

The performance of the 2005 and 2004 G35X will be almost identical. (The big difference is the interior.)

Modding the G35X is somewhat limited. Wheels, tires, air intake, z tube, springs and cat back exhaust are among your mod options. Each has been reviewed extensively on this site. Pic a key word(s), include G35X and use the search function for best results.
