Momo Shift **** Installation

Hey its me again. You guys are so helpful I love this forum. I just got my momo shifter in.

http://www.ltbmotorsports.com/automatic.html

I have an 03 G35 Automatic and was wondering if anyone could help me through the installation of the shift ****.

I have some instructions that came with it but I'm not sure how to remove the factory shifter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

take a flat screwdriver and GENTLY push down on the silver trim at the bottom of the stock shifter. go around, pushing it down a little bit at a time. it'll drop down with little effort. there will be a C-shaped metal clip that the trim covered - you can grab it with tweezers from the front (of the car) and pull forward - it'll come off. then just pull the shifter up and it'll come off.

Unfortunately that DIY is like many others now..
no pics

Text pretty well covers the removal of OEM.
When installing the MOMO..
Remove the white plastic plunger on the top of the shaft.
(not req'd with the new one)

Install the rubber bushing & slide it on.
Tighten the allen set screws, turn on the trim collar & you're done.

10 to 15 min job max...

You forgot one step.

If you use the rubber bushing you have to cut the top off of it. I didn't use the rubber collar, I just wrapped a few layers of electrical tape around the shifter shaft. That worked fine.

Thanks...
The other thing I forgot is the mounting height.
You will have to play with the height a little.
-Too low & you will activate the ignition interlock... won't be able to take the keys out..
- too high & button won't work to let you shift.

Problem #2:

Well now it makes sense because I was trying to install the thing with that white plastic plunger still on.

Problem is I kept dropping those tiny little alan screws and I lost a couple of them. I'm going to head to pepboys and see if they can recommend something.

In case I don't figure it out: Main thing I'm confused about is the black plastic pieces that go on top of the shaft. Are the alan screws supposed to penetrate the plastic piece to keep it in place, or does it actually have to go all the way up inside the ****? I got confused when it was mentioned to cut the top of it.

Also if anyone knows what kind of alan screws those were, or if you can tell me what kind of screw might substitute for them it would save me a headache.

Thanks again you guys are the best.

You can get replacement screws at your local hardware store. I found them at Orchard Supply.

Are the black sleeves plastic or rubber? The MOMO **** I bought came with a variety of black rubber sleeves with various thicknesses. This is intended to take up the space between the shifter shaft and the shift **** and keep the **** centered. The reason you have to cut the top off is to allow the button on the **** to contact and activate the plunger in the shifter.

The set screws should not touch the sleeve. They should screw directly onto the metal shaft. If you don't want to fuss with the sleeves just wrap some electrical tape around the top of the shaft.

Sorry Skeleton, I meant rubber not plastic. I actually bought a 20 dollar shift **** from pepboys because it had the same parts as the momo. So I'll probably just use the pieces I need and then return it lol.

I'll mess around with the **** in a bit. I think the part that confuses me is how the screws secure the the shifter. There's no holes for it to go through, so I don't see how tightening the screws secures the shift **** to the shaft.

I'll try one more time with the rubber pieces and then I'll resort to the electrical tape if I have to. Would I have to wrap the tape around the top and the sides of the shaft or just the sides of the top? I'm assuming I have to have enough tape to make the **** a bit tight around the shaft as it slides down?

oh a more serious note, about the way the screws secure the shifter...

think of a christmas tree and the christmas tree stand - you stick the tree into this stand, and then screw in these 3 opposing screw things to hold it up and in place.

it's an excersise of careful balancing and tightening each screw a little bit at a time, to make sure the **** sits centered on the shaft.

codeflux gave a great explanation with the Xmas tree analogy. The screws are not meant to thread into the shaft, they are merely set screws.

The tape gets wrapped around just the sides at the top. The width of the tape is pretty close to the rubber pieces, so it works great. Yes, the tape will make the **** fit a little snugger.
