VDC saved my ***(ets)...
VDC saved my ***(ets)...
...and my G's ***(ets) too! Boy did I ever drink from the stupid cup yesterday.
The roads were a little wet on my way home yesterday; it had rained probably an hour or two before. So I'm on an entrance ramp, a long sweeping 270 degree right-hander that's a whole lot of fun to take aggressively, but with it being wet, I decided to forgo my usually high spirited acceleration. About two thirds the way through the curve, there's a pick up truck and an integra pulled over on the left side,..what's the commotion I wonder? There a Boxster that's plowed into the fence on the left side of the curve, and the fence is about 25 feet from the edge of the roadway. So I'm thinking "poor guy, there's another driver who didn't know the limits of his driving skills"... Just then my tail starts to slide out, scared the sh-- outta me! Felt the VDC kick in, lifted off the throttle, traction regained, and my *** was saved! Felt like God was issuing an instant penalty for thinking negatively about someone else.
I guess I got distracted enough that my foot dropped on the gas a little bit causing the tranny to downshift, that little extra power boost was enough to break loose the RS-A's. For a split second I had flashes of a G right next to that Boxster.
I think I need a set of new tires..... I think my heart rate was up 50% the rest of the way home!

Re: VDC saved my ***...
I'm with you brother. That VDC can be a real life saver. I didn't have a high speed incident like you but, last winter I decided to test the VDC on a frozen parking lot. First, I turned the VDC off and spun out all through the lot. There were patches of ice and patches of dry tarmac, so the car spun up and chirped and basically drifted all over the place. Then I turned the VDC back on and I could *not* break the back end loose. It's not like I was on a frozen lake or anything, but still... I was very impressed with the car's ability to regain its footing like that.
Also, like you, I want to get some better tires. I've broken the back end out twice while taking long, fast corners.

I got into a situation during the winter where even the VDC couldn't help me. You can't always rely on it.

Re: VDC saved my ***...
I've got two quick, sharp 90 degree curves about 100 yards from my house- left, 50 foot straightaway, right, straightaway... I've done my share of testing VDC on them, and I've got to say that I'm pretty impressed. A few of my other cars are RWD and don't like those too much when I test them, but the G eats them up and spits them out.

Well, if you're one of those people that lives where there's white stuff, VDC can't give you extra traction.. you need winter tires for that.
chinee: My first car was an old RWD land yacht (83 Ford Crown Vic). It liked to break the rear end loose on gravel or puddles or whatever, so skid recovery became an instinctive skill for me. The first time I wasn't expecting my G to skid, it was a very weird feeling. The back end broke loose and started to kick out, my brain registered the event and prepared to recover, then the VDC kicked in and the back end bit down again and jostled me back the other way, then my brain goes "nevermind." Then, 10 seconds later after the event is fading from memory... the adrenaline kicks in.
I like the VDC. While I fully believe I could recover from most skids, I probably require a little more space than the VDC system requires for the recovery. It manages not to swing the tail off the shoulder or into the next lane in the process.

Re: VDC saved my ***...
i found VDC to not help in the snow. I live in new jersey and this winter we were blessed with alot of white stuff. I live in an area that is for the most part flat, but there are some "hilly" regions. My point being taht the VDC cuts the power out when u need it most in the snow. Tire Spin is expected but sometimes its needed to make it up slight rises in the terrain. idk just my experience. But in the rain i dont mess around, that vdc is a life saver and can def bring the car around in a messy situation
Re: VDC saved my ***...
Dragging with 350 and coupes with vdc off. Did not let up off the gas in time to the end of the street. end result; right tire blew out, skidded thru the stop sign and into the curb. Expensive way to get a new set of rims!! VDC all the way!!!!!!!
Re: VDC saved my ***...
ouch mlove.. that hurts..same thing happened to me.. well..almost the same.. long story short... i spun out hit the curb.. had both pasanger side wheels and tires replaced and the whole rear suspention.. the tire was like this / after hitting the curb...
