Any experience with the Firestone Firehawk WideOval? I called a local performance tire shop (referred to me by Ryoken) asking about the Kumhos and he strongly suggested the Firehawks, for the price. VERY good reviews on TireRack... but I also had an Explorer with the now infamous Firestones... Thoughts? I'm looking @ the 235/50R17.

I used to put different models of Kumho's on my Maxima, and the tread life was horrible.
are the BFG's noisy?...hows the ride?

I had the Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP on my 2k2 Maxima and those were the best tires I ever owned. Don't let the Ford/Firestone fiasco turn you off of Firestone. When manufacturers want tires for a mass produced vehicle, they tell the tire guys what to make and for how much. You never heard of GM trucks blowing tires and flipping - many of those came with the same tire.

I will definitely look at Firestone for the G when the time comes.

I went with the Kumho ASX 245/45 17 on my sedan. So far they seem great, drove them in them in a heavy rain last monday for the first time no problems. I only have around 800miles on them. I like them much better than the stock Goodyears that came with the car, but only time will tell.

Why would wider tires affect your gas mileage that badly (2-3 mpg)? I also wanted to go from the stock 215's to 235's.

why not give avon tech M550 A/S a try, they are available for 125$ from where I buy and they seem to be nice as far as tirerack riviews go...thats what I am planning on going with..

Just got my avon tech M550's last month....so much better than the Turanza's. They look like they will be a much better winter performer as well though no snow yet. IMHO definitely the best bang for the buck.

they shouldn't. i think it was the intention to point out the over-repeated unsprung weight rule. it all depends on the tire.
my recommendation: toyo proxes-4. ultra-high performance all season lightweight tire with excellent grip in both dry and wet, decent tread life, and quite a neutral sidewall (not to stiff not too soft).

i've had the firestone wide ovals, 235/50-17, the avon tech m550, 215/55-17, and now the bridgestone turanza LS-V, 225/55-17. bad luck with the firestone and the avons. couldn't get them to balance for shi*. and i had every shop around try them on the hunter road force balancers too. just bad luck i guess. luckily i got them credited for the price i paid under the 30 day ride guarantees. the bridgestones are really a nice tire for the car and for my driving type. they compare closely to the avons, as they were both all season tires. the firestones were summer only and did have more grip, but not that much that i could really say they were alot better. i would recommend the bridgestones if you want a nice ride, good grip and a good looking tire. price is a bit more than the avons, but i think they are worth it. and so far, no balancing issues.........

i did seem to get less mpg with the 235/50 17 tires. just my 2 cents.
