Leased g35x Tire/Wheel quandry
Hello,
I leased an 06 g35x and want to replace the tires.
I originally wanted to get new tires and rims, but realized its silly to buy rims for a car i wont own in 35 months.
So I want to get some winter tires for ski trips, since it was main reason for purchase.
Im thinking of getting some dunlop m3s in 215/55r17 stock size and replacing them in the summer with 235/50r17 goodyear f1 gsd3.
How bad is replacing and mounting and balancing tires twice a year on the same rims?
Should i get some bigger summer tires on 18in rims and just buy them?
again, remember this is a lease.
TIA,
K
btw, what do i do with these stock turanzas that have less than 1200 miles on em?

Depends on how much the rims cost and how much it costs you to have the tires remounted. Have you checked the prices? If you don't care so much about how it looks, you can consider some cheaper steel wheels for the winter tires. Also consider that if you get some nicer rims for the summer, you shouldn't have too much trouble selling them at the end of the lease. Check out ebay or craigs list and see what used rims with used tires on them are going for.
As for the stock turanzas.. you can sell them, or you can save them for the end of your lease.. perhaps you'll have bald tires by then and can stick the stock tires back on to avoid penalties for turning in a car with worn tires. The turanzas are pretty pricy, so it's probably cheaper to sell them now, and buy some cheap touring tires at the end of the lease if need be.

Thanks, I'll try and sell the tires.
My plan was to keep the stock 17in rims as my "cheap" winter rims, didnt want to roll around in steel rims for the winter.
I was looking at the least expensive 18x8 in rims on tirerack, was around 160 for the least expensive. Not looking to pimp them out really, but just get wider lower profile shoes on em. The stock tires/wheels seem to be limiting the car.
I guess i'll just get the winter mounted now on the stock rims, and look for a good tire wheel combo come spring time.
Can anyone recommend a decent wheel and tire size for the x car as an upgrade, nothing too outrageous.

My take on this is that, even though it is leased, I'm not living w/crap tires for one month let alone 36 months especially on a car like this. And since I got credit for the originals, all the more reason to do so.
...but I'm not a fan of running two sets of tires/rims, and especially de-******* and ******* summer/winter tires - especially on a leased vehicle. Why buy aftermarket rims for a car that is really not yours...? Get a good All season tire that is more geared towards performace like the Michelin Pilot's - I drove my G35x for the 1st time in the snow and it was great.

Well my whole shtick in getting new tires is convincing the missus that we "need" snow tires. And i really want them, main reason for getting this car was to go skiing more often.
So if i go from a perfectly new set of a/s tires to albeit it much better a/s tires, im not sure i can get that past the finance commitee.
Ironic since that option is probably the least expensive in the long run. I should prob go this route.
Can you tell me more about those pilots in the snow btw? and 225 instead of 235/50 in the stock rims?

As for myself, I'm an avid snowboarder and went snowboarding w/it last week - there was about 2" of snow on the road and I was driving 40+ MPH and it was very sure footed. Are they as good as pure snow-tires; no, but I was not out of control either nor did I feel lit I was going to ditch it. The AWD on the G35x is fantastic.
Not much to say about the Michelin Pilot's other than they are way better handling, WAY quieter on pavement, good in the rain, and decent in the snow.
...yes they are on the stock rims - see attached photo
