2006 G35 review after 800 miles (rental car)...
I don't own a G35, but I am considering purchasing one. I needed to travel on business last week so I figured what better way to test out a car. I rented a 2006 G35X. It was brand new when I picked it up from Enterprise. It had only 6 miles on it. I put over 800 miles on the car in four days. My daily driver is a modified 2000 Mustang GT 5 spd.
The G35 is a wonderful car. A few weeks ago I posted a comment about the amber gauges. Well, it turns out that during my first test drive the brightness was turned up all the way on the dash and that’s what made those gauges looks so horrible. I turned down the brightness and the gauge looks just fine. The auto transmission is a dream. I love the rev-matching and the crisp, quick shifts. In the past, I had a Honda Prelude with a manumatic transmission. The shifting delay was ridiculous on my old Prelude. They have come a long way on these manumatic transmissions. I don’t think I will miss my notchy Mustang 5 speed manual. Quite honestly, I am burned out on manual transmissions. Driving in Chicago traffic just isn’t pleasant having to shift the transmission constantly.
As for squeaks and rattles, I didn’t notice any and I was purposely trying to listen for them. However, it takes time for those to develop and my car was brand new. During highway cruising, I thought interior was super quiet. Just enough road noise entered the cabin to remind me that was driving a sports sedan.
I was also extremely impressed with stock stereo system. For a base model system, I thought it was excellent. During heavy bass, the rear view mirror and rear window vibrated pretty badly. That was disappointing.
The car had plenty of power 0-80 mph. However, I think my Mustang pulled harder at higher speeds, but who cares. I don’t really plan on spending too much time above 80 mph anyway. I was also driving a G35X, so it’s a bit heavier. I also thought the stock engine/exhaust sound was pretty cool, but I’d probably make is a bit more aggressive with some aftermarket parts.
I’ve narrowed my car search down to the G35 AT w/sports package and the IS 350 w/sports package. I’ve already driven the IS 350 and I loved it. However, the interior room is no where near as spacious as the G35. It sure was nice being able to cart three adults to dinner in the G35 last week and knowing everyone was comfortable. Trunk space on the two cars is a tie. I also like the exterior of the IS 350 better than the G35.

When I bought my first G35, 2004, I traded an '00 Mustnag GT vert in on it, given my GT was stock, but I have never missed the GT, I doubt you will either if you buy a G!

I think you will find for your money the G35x is an excellent deal vs IS350. G35x would be a better car particularly if you drive in snow. And if you have to pay the money for an IS350, I would definitely look at BMW more closely.
If history is any indication, I would strongly advice against getting the IS350. The reason being that BMW will probably come out with a 350i that kicks the IS350 in every performance category. It happened with the IS300 and I honestly don't see BMW running their 3.0L inline six any longer.

you will have to call enterprise ahead of time and request the car, and you may need to have a Credit card handy. Enterprise has really good customer service, but you have to be agressive with them. they won't volunteer any information. in the same class rentalas the G35 is the volvo S40, and even though they aren't anywhere near matched, they are fun to drive car for a few days plus its a rental.
Yup, in the Chicagoland area, Enterprise rents G35s and FX35s. After reading on this forum about people's legs going numb from the seat controls pinching into their legs, I did the same thing. Rented one from Enterprise and let her rip! I wanted to make sure the controls didn't bother my leg before I bought the car. I was hooked the minute I reversed out of the Enterprise parking lot.
Everyone, is there a TSB for the vibrating rear view mirror? I think there's one for rattles but don't remember one for vibrations. My 2005 vibrates, whereas the loaner I have right now doesn't seem to. Thanks.

A local enterprise here rents out M35's too.
RE: The G vs the IS350, I guess it really comes down to how much you want to spend and how important AWD is to you. Good luck with whatever you choose.
