(searched but could not find similar issue)

The other day I hit the brakes in snow to test out the ABS. They felt like they worked pretty good, but I was startled by the horrible buzz coming from the engine bay while they were ABSing (is that a word?).

Is this noise normal? What do your brakes sound like when ABS kicks in?

 

Normal. It's the sound of the ABS valves opening and closing several times per second to modulate the brake pressure at each wheel.

 

I never heard a noisier ABS operation than this one. It almost sounds like some kind of alarm buzzer (maybe to let pedestrians know that you are about slide through the intersection and take them out? )

I had a '93 Mazda MX6 in the early years of ABS. The G is quiet in comparison. My wife's '01 Sunfire sure isn't quiet either.

 

you'll also hear it test itself when you first start up the car and put the car into gear
