Just got my ATF flush over the weekend at an Infiniti Dealer and they used: Quaker ST Tran Fluid - LOCALANTOIL. I asked them if it's comparable to the REQUIRED Nissan Type J ATF and they said it was. Anybody else's dealer use this? They used 12 quarts for the flush and fill and the the price they charged me is only $2.59/quart. I've read that the Nissan Type J ATF is like $12/quart isn't it? Is my dealer being cheap and possibly harming my transmission (not to mention warranty)? I specifically told him that the owner's manuel said Type J fluid or the warranty on the transmission is voided and he said he knows and that this will not void the warranty. I got that in writing too because I emailed him and he replied as such.

If the manual says J-matic or equivalent, then they can do that. If it says J-matic only, then I think you need to call Infiniti customer service and ask.

First I've heard of any Infiniti dealer using anything but Type J fluid.
Infiniti is very **** about the fluid they use and other dealers say outright that use of any other fluid will cancel the tranny warranty.

Apparantly Type J is a very good quality synthetic fluid.
By the price, it sounds to me like the Quaker State isn't synthetic.

You'd think the dealer would know what he's doing, but if it were me, I'd get advice from an Infiniti tech. at customer service., or even talk to another dealer.

The safe bet is to only use the Nissan Matic J ATF. That is what the transmission was performance validated with. Using anything else creates risk - you can judge better than anybody else how much risk you are willing to take.

Anyone making the assertion that their fluid is equivalent to another is doing it based on theory. It is unlikely that they repeated all the performance testing necessary to prove out a fluid. It is simply too expensive and time consuming.

I have personally found very significant performance differences between different fluids.
