Quote: Some radar detectors warn you of emergency vehicle approaching, closed sections of highways, construction delays, school bus approaching and so on. Only DC and Virgina make use of radars illegal.

If you approach a military gate with a radar detector you will be asked to turn it off and/or remove it from its mount and put away. They will not confiscate it or destroy it.

Some have built-in options to keep you awake when your driving for a long time.
hey sorry to thread jack but what detector does all that? link?

the instructor is full of s*** and the cop/judge was out of line smashing the detector.

i researched this for countless hours before buying my x50. (i live in ny).

radar detectors are illegal in all situations *only* in D.C. in VA, like people have pointed out before, and i think it is related to all the military/government stuff they have around there. (i am not sure of the specifics of laser detectors, but usually laser detection is not accurate enough to let you know you are being targetted until it's already too late.)

radar & laser jammers are illegal everywhere. (and laser jammers are mostly mythical products, anyway)

as a corollary, in NY, radar detectors are prohibited in commercial vehicles as well as vehicles over a certain weight. in other words, it would be fully legal in NY to carry around a detector in your G.

*however*...if you don't know how to use the detector, and get pulled over with it in your car, you *will* be getting a ticket for *something*... so be careful

radar detector in Cali
For sure, here in CA, detectors are not illegal although cops do not like seeing them on cars. If you do get stopped and the cop sees it, he might give you a ticket outright as opposed to just a warning.

So far though, my Passport 8500 has saved me quite a few times!!!

driving instructors are idiots. Their experiance is based on hearsay (i.e. When a student of mine was pulled over a student of mine...so its illegal) and the laws of 1982 which do not reflect the trends of today.

Many driving instructors are there to scare you (obviously, their are some honest ones). They sensationalise their lessons. If you think something is wrong, go check (like you have here) and challenge it.

Quote: Depends on the state you're in, but I think you're right. Looks like they're only illegal in Virginia and D.C.

Look here: Mobile Scanner and RADAR-Detector Laws In The United States
Correct!! If I could legally run a radar dector I would, but I am in VA.

Although my wife has FD plates on her vehicle and she has gotten out of all kinds of tickets.

There is no FEDERAL law that prohibits LASER jammers. They emit LIGHT NOT RADIO WAVES therefor the FCC has NO jurisdiction over them.

There may be LOCAL or STATE laws however.
