Smile Rear Spoiler

My 2003.5 6MT is going to be traded in for a 2006 6MT. The 2006 doesn't come with a factory spoiler.
Are spoilers in passenger cars cosmetic or functional ?
And if functional, at what speed(s) does it function?

once a thread me read that a spoiler for the G was both for added style and function at about 140mph.

140 MPH??? I'm not a professional driver and the fastest I was comfortable driving with the 2003 6MT was about 105-100. It did have a lot more guts inside but will I ever get above 140? Not in this lifetime.
