Smile Skyline 350 GT-8

Hey Guys,

Was wondering if you guys get a version of the Skyline 350 GT-8 over there in the states.

It's the equivalent of your G35 sedan, but comes with an 8 speed paddle shift auto.
I'm from Australia and we can bring these in from Japan at a very good price so was wondering if any one over there has one and if yes your opinions.

did a quick search and couldn't find anything
Thanks hepas

I have watched a video review from Japan about that gear box... and they said it is not necessary and does not function well either...

Thanks for that, heard some similar remarks, however I heard the box was extremely well built and a great gearbox in general, but also heard that 8 speeds was not really that necessary in the Skyline.

I didn't know that CVT's (Continuously Variable Transmission) HAD gears. I thought it was one big gear. I drove one of the Ford 500's with the CVT and it was just wierd. It was like a golf cart, step on the gas and swoosh.

Tell you what, I could use one more gear in mine. We could get a LOT better mileage if we did.

having 8 speed im guessing ur over 5000 rpm after every redline. It must be faster than a 6 speed.

I think Best motoring reviewed the 350GT-8 a few years ago... maybe you can search for that DVD if you have time.

but yes, having 8 gear sounds cool

Nissan only use this gear box in the 350GT, not even with the M35/45 etc, I guess Nissan need more time on that...

This transmission has never been offered in the US because it can not cope with the temperature extremes (specifically low temperature) experienced in some places in North America. It's a toroidal CVT and as such has no gears. Programming is used to provide 8 fixed positions, which is kind of silly considering that the efficiency gain of a CVT is mostly due to it's infinite ratio variability. They could just as easily made it a 10 speed or 1000 speed by changing the code. From what I've read, like all CVTs, it's not a fun transmission. Try google and search for extroid CVT.

^+1 Yes CVTs have one continuous drive system.
