Nav Systems..Worth it?

Hey guys. First post and now I subscribe to about 40 forums it seems.

Anyway, I'm buying a g35 this week and I really want the nav system but I'm not sure if I can justify the cost. What does it cost anyway? I think I read something like 2000.

My friend has one in her mercedes and it's awesome. What's your opinions? what else can you do with them? Any possible dvd conversions etc..

Thanks for the help.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

Welcome to the forum--

First of all, it's about 2K MSRP, but much like the car, you can talk them down to pretty much invoice on this.

You'll find opinions on both sides of the fence here. A lot of people who didn't get it say it's worthless, but those who got it can't live without it. I fall into the latter category. I've used it more times than I can count since I've gotten in, such as just typing in restaurant names, looking for stores by the POI feature to see if there's a best buy, et al around me, etc. When I go run a bunch of errands, I just program in the waypoints, so I don't forget to stop by the post office, or neglect to pick up the drycleaning. It's about 1 minute of work to do it, and I've got someone telling me to remember to drop off the mail.

When you're in traffic, you can see all the side-streets, so you can easily get off the road you're on and cut through small streets people might not know about in order to get to your desitnation faster, too. That's my favorite feature-- if I have to get off the road I know into unknown territory, I can easily see what's around me, and ususally I can see far enough to where I should be. Pretty handy feature, but that's just my opinion. Considering I used to use Mapquest and information all the time, this has made my life easier. To me, it's worth every penny... I'll be moving soon as well, so it'll REALLY help out when I don't know my way around town.

PS-- yes, there is a company that makes a virtually "plug and play" box to turn your Nav screen into a DVD player. That's the extremely short version of what they do, but you can visit www.avelectronic.com to see more. Good luck!

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

You have to ask yourself, Do I like stoping somewhere and asking for directions? If you answer is yes then skip the Nav. If it's no then pony up and get it. When I was shopping for a car that was one of my top priorities. I have only had my car 3 days and I have used it four times.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

yes yes yes..plz get it! if i can go back a year ago and re-pick the car again, i would definitely get the navi package! its worthy and it will make your car much more luxury (just my opinion) i am so regret for not getting the navi ! recently my friend got the navi package, man! i was drooling all over the place! its very useful, it makes ur life much easlier when u need to find a certain destination, easy to use, and last but not least, when u dont need it just push down and hide it... isnt that nice or wat! well, its up to u! i, personally would get it for sure! good luck!

03, twilight blue (not a special color anymore!! that sucks!!) prem, HID, too bad didnt get sports suspension and navi !!!

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

Since it pops up so high above the rest of the console, I find that the occupants of cars next to me to tend to check out my NAV more than my occupants.

I second the usefullness of using the map for finding shortcuts. Also, I'm less stressed out when looking for addresses. There's the miles left before empty calculations, gas mileage calcuations, address book, just a lot of cool stuff.

Only downside is you can't keep it when you sell the car but it should make selling your G a lot easier.

Worth every penny bro. Comes in handy when you had a few drinks and you are lost...not that I ever need it for that. lol. But more important it looks cool...I love gadgets, so the more I have the happier I am. If you are in any doubt...just get it cause or else you will be thinking I should have, could have...etc.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

eventhough its a lot money i think its really worth the money. i dont have the navi and it seems kinda empty and plain in that area where the navi suppose to be located at. so if i have a second chance i would get it. it really makes the interior looks more luxury and hi-tech , besides that it would be useful IMO.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

The only downside to the Nav is that you lose the upper glove box, which is the only place where the owner's manual fits. Mine now sits in a trunk organizer bag in the trunk. The maintenance record is the only thing that fits in the lower glove box.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

Looks like you already purchased the car, but my vote goes to the "no" category. I could see it if you traveled out of state quite often, but who needs navigation for your own city? Save the $2,000 and put that towards engine modifications.

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

I'll tellya who needs navigation for their own city, My wife. We have lived in the bay area for 13 years and she still gets lost. with the Navi I don't get any more calls like "Ok sweety I am at stevens creek and lawrence, how do I get to Valley fair from here?"

Re: Nav Systems..Worth it?

If you are talking about SF/Berkely/Oakland I get lost there all the time. SF has so many 1 way streets that it makes it f'ng to take a direct route anywhere. I never seem to go to the same way twice when I go to the Bay Area. I was on the fence on the Nav system but I think I'll cough up the extra 2 G's and get it...........
