At 15K miles per year, one would pay almost $100 per month more in gas compared to the new G35 sedan.

Who in their right mind is gonna pay a gas guzzler tax? Someone who isn't phased by paying a grand or more for nothing at all.
Again, to even imply that the G35 is comparable to an M5, I just don't get it. Can't G35 owners get over this keeping up with the Jones? Evaluate the G35 on its own merits, stop thinking it outperforms a German car. Well, it does, what it lacks in resale it makes up for in reliability!
John105 - not necessarily. That 2001 M5 is valued around $35K or less... about the same or less than a G35. And it will probably depreciate much slower as well, even though maintenance (and possible repairs) would be higher. I would cross-shop those attributes... and am.
My point was more this... that M5 (stock) tends to get to 60 in about 4.8 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in about 13.3. That's faster than the G35, no doubt... but not that much faster than the 5.2 and 13.9 ON A BRAND NEW ENGINE that C&D just posted. Of course the M5 is faster, but my point is that basically it's a great time to be alive and love sports cars when entry level sedans are posting numbers like this. With the old G35, getting under 14 seconds in the 1/4 mile was very rare... with this new model, I think 13.8 or so will be the new lower limit in stock config. That's impressive, while having as much space as a 5 series and getting 19/27 mpg. It also weighs about 400 pounds less than the M5, so with suspension tweaks, should do quite well. I can't wait to really flog a G35 and see what the handling is like compared to the older model - if you read between the lines of many of the reviews, what they are saying (without saying) is that the new G35 has some impressive handling and roadfeel.
The new M5 is even more of a monster, no doubt. But we should be really impressed with what Infiniti is bringing to the table, as far as tech gadgets, performance and handling for well under $40K... on par with highly praised cars of just a few years ago. That's all...

We got our '07 at my dealership in Albuquerque yesterday (10/9). It is liquid platinum loaded up. There were five others on the truck, one going to El Paso and the rest to Florida. The Blue Slate is really cool. I wish I had ordered some of that color, I was afraid it was going to look like the Twilight, which is saleproof. The trunk opening is pretty small with the CD changer in the trunk.
