If you don't order the tech or nav package, will the CD changer play mp3's burned onto a CD?

Yes, it does. You'll get the in-dash 6-disc player that can play MP3s.
I'm not sure about WMA files, but the CF slot can read both MP3s and WMAs according to the brochure I picked up yesterday at the launch event.

Goofy ..... does the brochure say anything about copying MP3s from the CF card to the internal HD ?
I know that you can't copy from MP3 CD to the HD - but I had originally thought that the CF card can be used to copy --
Would you know ??

From our other threads, the impression is that we can't rip off the CF, but you'll need someone with the owner's manual to confirm that. Here's what the brochure says:
Compact Flash Slot: Play your MP3 and WMA music files through the dash-mounted compact flash slot. You can also store up to 3,000 songs on the vehicle's 9.5-gigabyte hard drive from your original CDs.
Again, I'm thinking it's their way to avoid copyright violations, to promote people to own their music and not have downloaded stuff. And it encourages CD sales.

It has been confirmed by Mike (07G) that you can not rip music from the CF card. Mike confirmed this from his owners manual.Originally Posted by GoofyG28

So, does the process of ripping a music CD to the HD also convert the cuts to MP3 format for HD storage? The claim of up to 3,000 cuts on the 9.5GB HD space available works out to something over 3MB per cut, which is typical for an MP3 track. Any information on the bit rate of the conversion? The storage claim suggests something between 96 and 144 ...
So, lets see .... 3,000 cuts at, say, three minutes per cut works out to 9,000 minutes, which at the 4X ripping rate, is only 37.5 hours sitting in the cаr feeding CDs into the slot. Piece of cake. Hire the kid next door to do it.

Hopefully we can find a way to replace the HD in the car ..... then you can at least "pre-load" the MP3s and you need to do this CD thing only for new tracks.
What a pain .....
with all the new MP3 players, you would think the copyright stuff would be worked out ...
I mean how exactly is it OK to let us play MP3 CDs (& keep 6 of 'em in the trunk) but not allow us to put those exact tracks on the HD - that's dumb.
Hopefully the "hack" for this is simple

Honestly, I am happy with my 6 CDs with 192+ kbps mp3 files. Who needs the HD? At least I won't have to rip my songs IN THE CAR at 4x.

You can rip the cd pretty fast. A normal 10 min trip will do it. It also picks up where you left off if you turn off the car. It's not as bad as I thought.

When you are playing the mp3's off the CD what do you see on the screen? Is it just the file name or does it display the full info you would see in iTunes or WMP on your PC?
