New Lexus LS460 has better fuel economy than new G35...

Here is spec on new Lexus LS460.

Curb Weight (lb / kg) 4,244

Engine Type 4.6-liter V8
Horsepower 380 @ 6,400 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 367 @ 4,100 RPM
Emissions Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II)

Performance
0-60 mph (sec.) 5.4
1/4-Mile Acceleration (sec) 13.9

Gas Mileage
City: 19 mpg
Hwy: 27 mpg

This 4,200lb luxury sedan with 380hp V8 has better fuel economy than new G35 which has 19/26?! And it has nearly equal performance to 60mph.

Either Lexus' technology is way above Infiniti or Infiniti is not trying hard enough on new G35. I'm not complaining on G35, I think it is still a great buy. It's just that this proves there is lots of room for improvement if Inifiniti really tries harder.

By the way, I just saw the G35 for the first time during lunch time today. Looks very nice. Until now I was going to buy IP with Graphite, but I'm completely sold on the Stone interior. They had dozen G35s in every color and sat in all of them.

AN 8-SPEED AUTO will do that for your fuel economy and acceleration... Infiniti has 5AT and 6MT, the 2 extra gears make the LS460 that much better in Gas mileage, but its also 2x the cost of the G so you can't really compare the 2

And the gearing in the G are very close ratio. Geared towards a more sporty experience. That's why our motors run around 3k at 80mph whereas the lexus will probably motor around 2k at 80 which will make it feel REALLY lazy.

How much $$$$ is a LS460 again? Corvettes get great highway gas mileage too.

Is that the ACTUAL observed mpg(tested by Edmunds, Road & Track, Car & Driver or Motor Trend) or is that what the LS460 sticker says?

I can't see how that mileage rating for the new LS can be correct.

Lexus is simply over the top, amazing. I drove a 2k6 LS430 on Long Island, and it was amazing--old generation, but I felt that this was the way to be stuck in traffic.

I didn't pay attention and was not aware the G35 was 26 on the highway--is that AWD or RWD? Even the 335 gets 29 mpg on the highway....

This section is about the new G35 not the Lexus even though it is interesting.
This should be moved to the proper section on the site, to the Other Cars section in Off Topic.

Too bad the Lexus still doesn't drive for crap. The LS is a car I'd love to be driven in (the long wheelbase model has an AMAZING rear seat) but I would never want to drive. If/when Infiniti has higher gear transmissions and direct injection, fuel economy will go up...as will prices.

I don't think there's any comparison, I hope we don't start claiming the G35 is better than a new top-of-the-line Lexus that costs tens of thousands more.

I really don't think that the highway mpg is indicative of gearing--the more gears or speeds, the more the ratios are spread apart. The highway mpg rating is imho indicative of fuel efficiency. You can't necessarily achieve that number, but it is a way in which to compare different vehicles tested under the same conditions.

Gearing has a great deal to due with fuel economy. American cars have extremely tall gearing. The new Corvette can achieve 28mpg on the highway because it's hardly revving above idle at cruising speed (1800RPM @ 60mph), thus less fuel injected into the cylinders. And the Lexus costs double of what the G35 does, so good fuel economy can be expected.

I respectfully beg to differ, the whole point of a 6-spd is not to add yet another taller gear into the mix, it is to cover the same range as a 5-spd but to spread it out over 6 speeds. Because I have it handy, I can tell you the 5th gear on a 335i sedan is 1:1, and 6th is .87:1. If the car had a 5-spd, then 4th would be 1:1, and 5th would be .87:1. It would be inaccurate to say that the car can achieve 29 mpg because the 6th gear, being .87:1, is so tall. my .02..

Buy a G and you'll get $23,000 worth of gas (good for around 156,000 miles) for free
