07 G35 Sport on the way - Few questions?
07 G35 Sport on the way - Few questions?
I ordered my 07 G35 Sport black/black with prem, nav, tech, 4WAS packages. Not due in until February.
While I wait I've been reading up on them and I have a few questions I'd like some advice on.
I'm looking at getting winter tires, the Dunlop M3's or the Bridgestone LM22/25's. Anyone have any thoughts on either of theses? I'm in Connecticut and have an 04 Jeep Liberty for when it's really bad out, not to mention I can work from home if it's bad weather... Would you recommend getting snow tires or good all-season? is there a big difference between the all-season and snow tires? I'll put the Summer tires back on in spring.
For Oil, I'm looking at going with the Mobil1 extended perf 5W-30 and the mobil1 extended perf oil filters... Does the 07 G35 take the same oil filter as previous years? I've read up that it's not good to use the synthetics for the first 2K miles that the standard oil is better for the new seals.. anyone else heard of this? I've also picked up a filtermag as well.
Question on prepping a car: I don't want my dealer to prep the car, other then if they have to connect the battery or do something to the system to activate it. Does anyone know what steps are involved in prepping a car? I don't want it washed/detailed, I'm also concerned since this will be the first 4WAS the dealer will see, I want to make sure no one takes the car out for a joy ride or breaks it in, so I'm thinking of not even having them put the gas in the car... What's your thoughts?
Do you have any other recommendations for the new car?
Thanks!

Like you want to do I run snow tires in the winter. Don't bother with all season tires since you have the tires for the summer that comes with the car. Snows are the way to go. As far as which ones it's best to go to tirerack.com and read the data they have on each of the snow tires to see which ones perform the best under the conditions you are going to use them in. For example some are better on ice and others better on snow.
Many cars today come from the factory with synthetic oil i.e. BMW and Corvette so the days of needing dino oil for break in are pretty much gone.
As long as the oil meets SAE specs you're fine. What I would do is run it to at least the first 1,000 miles and change to mobil 1 then.
As far as prep goes there isn't a lot the dealer needs to do. They check all the fluids, make sure nothing is missing, bolts are tight, no scratches, remove any paint protection, plastic on the seats, etc. I wouldn't give up a free tank of gas. Dealers aren't going to beat on a customers car.
Don't let them put your front license plate bracket on unless you don't mine two holes in your front bumper.
Best advice, relax and enjoy your new baby.
I agree with all above. Just make sure not to baby it or drive at constant RPM for long during the breakin. Give it full throttle after 50 miles or so, then drive normally for 5-10 minutes, then hit it again. Do this every day for the first 1000 miles (at freeway onramps etc.) and the motor will seal up nice and use less oil throughout its life.
As far as prep, just tell them to peel the shipping plastic off the bodywork, but dont wash it. I have a black sedan and thats what I did. Get it home and apply a good clearcoat polymer wax/polish. Some people swear by the clay bar and I tried it on mine the first time, but I didnt see anything on the clay so I stopped. Some people also say not to apply wax on new paint. This is true for aftermarket bodyshop type paint jobs, but your car was on a boat for 6 weeks and a train/truck for 1-2, so it's cured. Get it sealed and protected ASAP especially in your part of the country with that weather. Congrats!

Thanks for the advice, I was leaning more toward strait up snow tires, so I'll go that way, Thanks for the tirerack.com site Sedanman, they actually have a lot of data there, good site. I was leaning toward the Dunlop M3's, but for the front tires they call for 225/50/18, but the M3's only come in 225/45/18... since it's the sidewall ratio (am I correct?) the 45's will be a little lower profile and should be a perfect fit? the Blizak's come in the 225/50/18 for fronts.
Good to know on the Syntics, My dealer does free oil changes for the life of the car (up to 5/yr) and for the first year gives an extra one, I'm going to take advandage of the free service and go with my own oil and filter. I've seen more negitive's on the OEM filters and I prefer the Synthetics. The dealer was also talking about offering an upgraded synthetic change for a few dollars more, that would be nice if they offered that upgrade from the free change.
Thanks Sedanman for the recommendation on the license plate, deffinatly don't want that getting put on.
For detailing, I have all my own stuff already, I use the Pinnacle and Wolfgang line, so I plan on doing the washing, claying, and using the wolfgange deep gloss sealant. I didn't want to chance the dealer putting swirl marks on the car. side story: I know this guy who just bought a new ford 500 in black at work, he went during lunch and picked it up, came back and parked the car, as the sun went down, you could see all the swirl marks on the side of the car. I felt bad for him.
Thanks Ballsiticus for the break in info.
Vengar, The price is still in flux right now, I was working with two dealers and they were basically competing, I ordered it at $1000 off MSRP, because I played a message from another dealer with that offer and they matched it. But we also made a deal that because it was over 3 months to recieve it, if the average negotiated price drops they will definitly do it (since the same thing applies to my trade-in), no questions asked. At the same time I have them looking into a service called "buyersedge" which is a service benefit I get through my employer; they have negotiated with infiniti to give all members a strait up $1000 over invoice,(results in $2700 off MSRP for my config) and it applies to the new 07 G35. The dealer hadn't heard of the plan before so I gave them the information and they are looking into it, I let them know the names of two dealers that are willing to do it at that price I should hear back next week.
Probably thinking why i didn't go to the other dealers, reason, this is my close dealer, the others are about 3 hours away. plus my dealer offers the free oil changes and will pickup and drop off the car (or loaner) at my work free of charge for all services... I also went into this expecting nothing but strait up MSRP, so I'm already much further along, and it may get better.
Thanks for all the info.

kring on the snow tires I would drop down to 17" and buy them already mounted. The 17" will give you a better grip in the snow and save you some money. Don't use your stock wheels to mount and unmount your tires on and here's why. First you risk damage to your wheels everytime mounting and unmounting is done. Second there's a chance the balance will get screwed up and you'll be making trips back to the tire place. Happen to me on my last G and I ended up going back 3 times to get the balance correct.
By having the snow tires already mounted on their own wheels you can swap the snows over to summer tires on your own without having to pay to have them unmounted and mounted withthe summer tires every year. In the long run the savings will almost pay for the wheels.

I'm in CT too bro. If you have a winter beater or can pass on driving in the snow altogether, don't bother with a winter set - unless you are very concerned with thread life (saving the summer tires for summer time only). Otherwise, if you even think you will be driving it in the snow, get yourself a dedicated wheels/tires set. The Blizzaks are superb in snow.
