Two weeks ago, I switched from a Network Engineer of 12 years to an IT Manager. It's been a huge change for me but I am really enjoying it so far and have welcomed the new challenge. But damn, it's been sooooooo different than what I have been used to so far in my career. Having a team of employees report to you and report directly to the CEO of the company is not what I have been used to.

I just did the same exact thing. I applied for an engineering job in a different dept. and was given the job. My previous boss got pissed that the other dept. was stealing me away and they offered me a supervisor position with an enormous raise. He said it was in my best interest to accept the position so I did, even though my heart was in the technical side of things. 1 week after accepting the job, he became the VP of our entire division. Had I not taken the job, my advancement in the future would have been non existant. We have roughly 1000 people in our IT dept. Man is it a huge change. In many ways it's easier, but in others it's a challenge.
