I have picked pieces of CF questions out of different threads, but have not been able to answer this one here or in the owners manual.

How does the CF reader read folders and subfolders? It seems to me as if my current card is only being read at the bottom level of folders. While the owners manual talks and diagrams stackable folders, it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Here's what I have as an example on my CF , I see two top level folders when I open my card in Windows Explorer with two artist names:

Folder Artist Name 1
----->Subfolder Album Name 1
----->Subfolder Album Name 2

Folder Artist Name 2
----->Subfolder Album Name 3
----->Subfolder Album Name 4
----->Subfolder Album Name 5 (A 2 disc set)
----->----->Subfolder Disc 1
----->----->Subfolder Disc 2

When I pop the card in, all that I see is:

Subfolder Album Name 1
Subfolder Album Name 2

Subfolder Album Name 3
Subfolder Album Name 4
Subfolder Disc 1
Subfolder Disc 2

Essentially it just seems to be reading the bottom level folders. Its fine I guess for now, but what am I doing wrong?

 

that would suck since that's how I plan on putting the files on my CF card...it's how I have my music organized on my computer.

 

Same here. I have everything else working including the file sorting, but this folder thing is driving me up a wall.

 

Still having trouble with it but at least finding a workaround for now.

 

Anyone else been playing around with the ordering of the folders on the card and encountered this?

Just a suggestion for a work around. You can pre-pend your subfolders' names with the parent folders' names. This would obviously only work a couple of levels down, but might suffice for the near-term.

Example (as seen on your PC):
Parent Folder: Tom Waits
-->Subfolder: Mule Variations

Example (as seen in your G35 audio system):
Parent Folder: Tom Waits
Subfolder: Tom Waits - Mule Variations

This would keep your folders properly ordered and would be simple to accomplish programatically if you have some computer programming skills (or know anyone who does).

 

I thought about this, but if you have a band with a somewhat long name and a half dozen albums of each, it looks like given the shortness of the characters you can see on the screen, I'm not sure if that would work.

It's by file timestamp apparently. There are various tools available to change the metadata of files like the timestamps, check them out and they could put you in the right direction to ordering the files.

 

Yeah I was able to solve the file ordering structure. I'm more interested in solving the issue of, why does the CF reader not read folder structures, instead it just seems to display the bottom level folder.

 

I've been playing around with the edits, and still, for some files that are clearly written in the correct order, it still reads them (incorrectly) in alphabetical.

ed - In some but not all cases its the file Date Created, not Date Modified that appears to be sorting the song files. Same with the folders, they are sorted by Date Created, not Date Modified. How annoying.

Certainly Infiniti can do better than this in terms of mp3 software. Hope this is an update in the future.
