Window Tint - Type & Product

It's been a long time since I've looked into window tinting, but can't find any good resources on it. I've called around and everyone claims to use the best stuff, but I can't get any real information on these products. is it all the same in the end and that's why there's nothing to read up on? or is the "tinting community" just non-existent?

I see Ceramic tinting, metallic tinting, dye tinting.

Then I see companies like 3M, Ray-Ban (the sunglass co.), hupertoptic, and a few others...

Does anyone know anything about these products and types of tint, or have you any success in finding a website that has information on tinting?

The only thing that I can tell you is that I have problems with cell phone reception in my car when my windows are up due to my metallic tint. I never seem to have trouble when I rode in my ex-wife's car (which had ceramic tint).

Personally, I'd go with a high grade standard dyed tint or ceramic tint (not sure it's really worth all the added cost, though).

I can verify that 35% metallic works on 07G. No problems with XM radio, XM traffic, cell phone, and radio. I do not have tint on front windshield though.

well i have this 17% tints all around and 50% on my windshield. now i got mines done here at cali at a shop named california tint. The guy recommended me to stay away from the metallic tints because of interference wtih radio cellphones and things like that. so i got the dye tint i belive. now for the 3m stuff i havnt really heard too much about them so i wouldnt really be able to give u an honest opinion on those. Go with a Ceramic/Die tint those always work well

Older metallic tints sometimes caused reception issues with cell phones and AM radio, not so much anymore. I just did full metallic 32% on my car and no issues at all. The generally agreed on "top three" are Llumar, Huper Optik and Solargard. 3M stuff is hit or miss, for the most part I find reputable tint shops tend to steer clear of 3M stuff.

PS, for ChristianN's question below this; I do not believe it is legal anywhere in North America to have your front windshield tinted, but I could be wrong.

I didn't know it was legal anywhere to have your front windshield tinted. Looks pretty damn sweet, but I have a feeling I wouldn't want to drive with it at night.

Nor do I want to cross a busy intersection with stop signs with cars that have their windshield tinted. The inability to visually communicate is too dangerous for me.

that is very true and i definetly agree. but trust me its not as dark as it seems. the shot i posted up is at a fairly shaded area. and the angle i took it at only makes the tint look darker than it is. i have my girlfriend in the car and i can see her completely fine inside even at night. no worries homie when in doubt make a funny face so they can see u

are you in So Cal? More specifically, the Northridge area? I've been keeping my keen out for G lately, and so far I've only come across three: The Ivory Pearl, Liquid Platinum, and the Graphite.

I think you should display your G more proudly! I haven't seen you around!

I live in West Hollywood, but drive to the valley usually about 2-3 times a week. I also play golf at Porter Valley Country Club about twice a month. I've only seen one '07 G35 Sedan out on the streets and I live in a pretty affluent neighborhood. So if you see a tinted OB Sport driving down Rinaldi, it's probably me. So if you see me honk your horn or wave. It'll be nice to see a fellow g35driver member on the road.

Asuh,

I think I remember from the "Nationality" post, that you're an Asian member too, right? Well me too, I'll be sure to say hi next time (or the first time) I spot an OB G35!
Sadly, while I am a member, I'm not yet an owner. I either drive an '04 Silver Prerunner or a '76 blue 911. see you around..

Dude ... the tinted windshield looks really cool! BUT ... it's just a matter of time before you get that fix it ticket.
