Compact Flash Restrictions

Can someone please confirm what the CF restrictions are - it is limited by the size of the CF card or the number of files (someone said it will only read the first 512 songs).

If this is the case, I guess it doesn't make any sense to order a 4 or 8GB CF Card?

Geeez ... I'm starting to find out all of these little "quirks" about the G35 system. I know its great relative to other cars, but, I just found out the CD Changer in the trunk doesn't read MP3's, and now, I'm restricted in how many songs the CF can read? What can I listen to???

First I'm going to get the parts you won't like out of the way. The compact flash will only read the first 512 songs and it will only show the top level folder eg) it will show the artist folder but all the albums show up together.

With that out of the way all the rest of the function of the CF card is seamless and very quick, I love it. The music box works very well and it records cds quickly. I probably use the XM radio the most of all the options and I have never put a cd in the changer.

Don't focus too much on the little quirks, the system is great and I'm sure you will love it. Pick up 2x2 GB CF cards and you'll be all set, they'll hold way more than 6 MP3 CDs anyway.

I just picked one off of ebay for $5 - looks like a USB memory stick with a slot on its side for the CF card.

I'm using a 2 GB SanDisk CompactFlash, works great, very fast.

I currently have 19 CD's on it, each album is its own folder. Can't do heirarchical folders, so can't do artist-album heirarchy. Haven't hit the song limit, but I guess 19 CD's is only about 300 songs. I'll probably pick up a couple more 2GB CF's as they go on sale, they store conveniently in the ashtray right below the CF slot.

For the reader, I bought the SanDisk USB 2.0 CF reader, cost like 17 bucks or so at Staples. Very fast file transfer if you have USB 2.0 port on your PC.

As far as what you can listen to, you can still rip a bunch of your CD's to the Music Box, but that takes time, max bit rate is 130 kbps, and 10 GB limit. You can also use your iPod, hooked into the aux input jacks in the center console. The downside to that is there is no true iPod controller for the 2007 (at least not that I'm aware of), so you need to actually use the iPod to choose albums / songs, you can't use the screen and steeringwheel controls.

I'm ripping CDs as I'm writing this and it appears that I will hit the 2GB size limit on the CF card, way before I hit the 512 count limit of the SOW.

I'm starting to think that I should have gone with a 4GB card...

Are there any 3GB cards out there?

That's probably because the average size of each song you are ripping is well over the 3.9MB (2000MB/512 songs = 3.9MB).

I'm thinking 4GB makes mores sense. Haven't seen any 3GB cards.

Yes they are. The avg. song size is about 5-6MB at 192Kbps...

I think I'll be going for a 4GB cards as well.

Yeah, there's no harm in having multiple CF cards. I have two 2GB CF cards and I just store the one I am not using in the ashtray.

Yeah, but I don't think people want to browse through hundreds of songs just to find a few. Not to mention, your system will shuffle through all of them.

So with just one level of folders (flat - no depth), would the system will allow you to select a specific folder and shuffle within just that folder and just play that folder's shuffled mix ??

If that's true I can start organizing my music to fit with this folder model -- its not perfect, but will work for me.

Yes you can choose CF card mix or 1 Folder Mix using the repeat button on the dash.
