I also remember a time driving at a respectable speed for LA freeways - and happen to glance next to me... there's a tire doing the same speed along the median.
I was doing at least 75 MPH - I speed up to pass the thing and it starts to wobble... we all know what was going to happen next.
I watch in my rear view as it bounces into traffic behind me. What a mess.

Glad you're ok. And pics would be cool.

While living in San Diego about 10 years ago I had a new Grand Cherokee with about 2000 miles on it and was following a flat bed truck hauling a hot tub south on I-15. Just minding my own business and enjoying a nice day, then what do you know the hot tub fell off and hit the freeway at about 65 to 70 mph!! It exploded spraying wood and plastic shrapnel across the front of my Jeep and down the passenger side. I feel your pain bro.

Wow, sorry to hear about this. But be positive. Had this thing came flying a bit higher it would have punctured in through the front windshield and right onto your face. It's a car and it can be fixed. Glad you're ok.

Didn't realize the bumper cover was so thin.

terrycs,

I don't think that is was because the bumper cover is thin. When this rod (or pipe) hit my car I was moving at around 70 MPH.

It's no surprise it went clear through the bumper. I am just thankful it didn't puncture my tire, or mess up my front suspension. That would have been serious, especially when travelling at that speed in rush hour traffic.

Regards,

Not saying its a bad design, just thinner than I imagined. I'm just comparing it to the bumper cover to my 89 T-Bird. That thing is about 1/8" thick min anywhere you drill it.

no worries bro, that'll buff right out but in all honesty, glad your safe to tell the story. I live in CA as well, our free ways suck (pot holes, dirt, rocks, paint...) you get the point.. not pointing out specific ones..

Bro,

What do you mean that it will "buff right out" - Its a hole! The metal rod went clean through and broke the plastic shield behind the bumper.

In fact, the car is in for repair as we speak. They got a new bumper within 3-4 days. I should have my car back by this weekend.

However, on the positive side, I am just glad this thing didn't do more damage or worse come through the windshield.

Regards,

I think he was kidding about it buffing out. That is actually quite impressive how smoothly it went through the plastic. Glad it didnt get the tire or worse yet, YOU. I am not sure if I would be feeling unlucky or lucky if I were you... nonetheless hope they get your sweet ride all patched up for you!!
