Credit Card Purchases

Have any of you purchased your G35 on a credit card? Did you have to pay anything extra to offset the service charge to the dealer? What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks

Not sure... it would depend on the dealer. If they do accept it make sure you're getting cash back rewards on that sucker!!

Damn, hope you'd pay it off right away too. Unless you have a crazy good APR.

My dealer allows you to put up to $5,000 on credit card. There was no additional fee for doing so.

I actually did this, $1,000 for the deposit, then $4,000 as part of the down-payment. I did this mostly because I picked up the car sooner than I expected (bought one off the lot Saturday, they wanted me to pick it up the followng Monday), and the money that I had been planning on using for the downpayment was in a brokerage account, which takes three days to get it transferred.

Naturally, you'd want to pay-off in full anything you put on the credit card, otherwise just finance it on the car loan, car loan rates are much better than the crazy APR's charged by credit cards.

Another benefit of dong the credit card for downpayment: if you get cash back or bonus miles, you'll definitely get a bunch charging five grand.

My dealer told me $5,000 was the most I could put on a credit card. I have already pulled out the cash and had it in my pocket so I really wanted to get rid of that money before something bad happened. That was the first time I paid cash (talking $100 bills) for a car versus a bank certified check, ect. They turned on a camera that recorded when I paid for the car and asked me all kinds of questions like where did the money come from, am I involved in illegial activities, ect. They almost made me feel guilty somewhat for bringing all that cash in and doing it that way. Of course, that feeling went away quickly after I got the car and realized I own the car free and clear. I thought about joking around and telling them I robbed a couple Circle K's on the way to the dealership but my luck would be someone would robb on the same day and the cops would be looking for them still...LOL!

Yep - the deal came through faster than I expected, before I could transfer money between accounts. So, I put something like $2,500 on a Discover card (hey, cash back ), to get to the $10k down payment I wanted. Paid the card back a week later.

Per another question, my dealer also imposed a limit - $2,500 was the max.

What if I wanted to put like 15-20K on a Discover card? Do you guys think a dealer might be amenable to that?

I have recieved a balance transfer offer from one of my credit card company in the past for 0% APR until paid in full (minimum monthly payment applies).

That would have been a real sweet deal if there were no limits imposed by the dealer and assuming you had enough credit to cover the whole car.

Most dealerships (and finance companies for that matter) limit you to a certain amount, one reason being that the cc companies ALSO want to be listed on the lien if they have a certain amout vested in the vehicle.

I am sure there are reasons, but just the thought of putting $15K-$20K on a CC seems suspect... as if you are stretching yourself too far to make the purchase. If so... take your time, instead.

Kind of like these threads I see about people going FI on a CC. Ouch... already going into debt... what if something happens? So much for fiscal responsibility.

No wonder the debt ratio of the typical American keeps rising...

One of the reasons dealers won't let you put the entire amount on a credit card is because they get killed by the fees. They are not allowed to pass on the fees so they would have to eat them. This at least is what I was told when I tried to do it on a previous car. I was paying in cash and wanted the airline miles.

The dealership told me a $5k limit was fairly standard.
