grade of gas required for 07 G35

Hey guys,

I am considering purchasing an 07 G35, just want to ask you what grade of gas you use in your G35. Is it premiun only, or do any of you use a lower grade of gasoline?

Thans in advance for your response.

Infiniti recommends premium unleaded. Regular will work however there will be degradation in performance.

hmm..I've always wondered this though: is it actually bad for the engine? What if you alternate between regular and premium?

It can be bad for the engine. The engine has knock sensors. When pre-ignition (knock) occurs, the engine retards timing to reduce the knock.
The knock has to be heard before timing is pulled. So this can be harmful over time. Some pinging will occur that the sensors won't pick-up.
It's best to use premium gas. The difference in cost is minimal. You will get better performance and your engine is designed to use premium.

Page 9-3 of operators manual:
FUEL RECOMMENDATION
INFINITI recommends the use of unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 93 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 98). If unleaded premium gasoline is not available, you may use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI number (Research octane number 91), but you may notice a decrease in performance.

Most modern engines have knock sensors and can adjust (retard) the timing accordingly to prevent knocking. So in short ... no problem (IMO). As a matter of fact, I don't even have easy access in Southern Cal for anything greater than 91. There is a poll floating around in the forums where I believe most voters are using premium.

Premium in CA is 91, so that's what I use. I don't go for a particular brand, just the cheapest I find. They all come from the same refineries anyway, whether it's Shell, Chevron, or the local no-brand gas station.

The savings from premium to regular is roughly $3.50. Its not worth the loss of performance. I think we can all afford premium.

I'm almost starting to think I should My MasterCard was canceled by my CC company because they assumed someone stole it based on the number of times I went to Shell last week?!

The engine is designed for premium fuel. The knock sensor is a safeguard system designed to pull timing and REDUCE knock. KNOCK has to occur to invoke the sensors and reduce timing. Therefore knock is occuring to some degree which is not a good thing long term.
If you HAVE to use regular you can, but you should be using the recommended grade of fuel that the car is designed for.

Spark knock is caused by compression-ignition. Your car cannot change its compression ratio; it merely retards timing to reduce the damage.

Short term, maybe no problem. Long term, you should probably take the advice of the sucker and buy the extended warranty.

Shell V-Power (93 octane).

From what info I have gathered it is the best. They control the gas throughout the refining and transport process.

A closed chain controlled by them right to the gas stations.

Plus I get 5% cash back on purchases with my trusty Shell Card ...
