Excessive Road Noise on Freeway

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

My G35X (one of the first built, bought in October 06), is quite noisy on the freeway, especially on rutted out concrete freeways.

Now, I know cars make noise under such conditions, however, this car is by far the loudest I've ever experienced. Noticed it as much louder on the very first day of ownership and thought that perhaps as the tires get worn in, the noise might moderate. Way louder than the Audi A4 Sport this car replaced...

Wondering if others have experienced this? Any thoughts?

I have a coupe and I hear that the excessive road noise has a lot to do with the tires.

yup, road noise is only generated by either the wind or the tires, it's the only two factors that touch the car. Now once the "noise" is occuring, it can be reduced by insulating the cabin. So that should be your diagnostic steps, 1.) is the car noisy 2.) is the car ok on noise but the cabin is not insulating the noise reasonably... As Hi-tech mentioned, your tires are probably going to be the best shot at reducing road noise.

hit www.tirerack.com and look up your tires, they have a noise indicator and other great information about tires that's compiled from real owners of the tires... use that to see if your particular tire is known for being noisy... then look up tires that are quiet and factor that into your next set.

My 07 Sport is definitely quieter than my 03 Coupe running on OEM Michelin Pilot Sport, so I'm happier with a quieter car. If road noise was your main concern, a Lexus ES or LS would have been a better choice.

There are certain sections of highway pavement around here that my car is especially noisy on. Curiously enough, a section that my Volvo used to be really noisy on, this car is way quieter. So, it could just be you have an unfortunate combination of road+pavement surface that is loud for you.

I noticed the same thing, on certain pavement its really rough and I feel some slight vibration because of that. I think the tires on our g35x suck over all.

Also check your inflation! Over-inflated tires can be noisier..

i was looking to see if anyone said that.. definitely check.. it can still be within spec and make a lot of roadnoise and u could prolly release some of the air and still be in spec as well... alignment issues may also add to road noise

I had an '05 loaner the other day and found it to be much louder than my 07. The G isn't as quiet as a Lexus for sure, but it's quieter than other cars I've owned.

The 07 is definately much quieter than previous gens. Tires also have a lot to do with road noise...esp performance tires.

If you guys want to know what noise is, Drive any Coupe and you'll feel like your Sedan is a Lexus! The sedans should not be all that bad. I know the Goodyear RSAs on the Journey, although having a poor rating on tirerack are super quiet and comfortable tires. That is the route I am planning when I purchase a G35sport. Swapping the staggered setup for the journeys 17s because I want to rotate and I know what it's like to have uneven wear causing even more noise on tires. The sedan, should not be noisey on the road. This is the first forum that mentioned anything with regards to this. Good luck.

My carpool buddy has a 2005.5 A4 sport and we alternate driving every other day. We both agree my 07 G35S is much quieter with respect to road noise than her A4.

I, too have noticed excessive road noise with my 07 G35 sedan 6MT. I swapped the 18" wheels for some 17"s and put on a set of Goodyear Eagle ResponseEdge tires. Could be the tires I chose are noisy. I'm considering having some sound deadening (Dynamat) added.

The staggered set up might be somewhat noisier than the cushiony Journey's 17" Goodyear Rsa's.
