Changes to 2008 6MT Trans

I am not sure if this has been posted, but automobile magazine recently ran a story on the 2008 G37 Coupe. They mentioned that a revised 6MT is on tap for it (we already new that ofcourse) and that specifically Noise, Vibration, and Harshness have been toned down. Finally clutch enagement is suppose to be better.

They then go on to say that the changes will be coming to the 2008 sedan as well. I personally cannot wait. It is one of the major things that is making me keep my coupe. I refuse to buy another G35 transmission dating back to 2000.

I had a chance to sit in the G37 at Stillen playing around with the clutch and shifter feels pretty good. The clutch is pretty light and not heavy at all. The guy there told me the vibration is all gone.

I'm interested in reading about what they revised and if the changes can be retro-fit. If it's just added isolation bushings or changes to the clutch slave or master cylinder, then it shouldn't be be hard to update the 2006 cars.

according to a sales person (i.e. not credible, and has no clue what he's talking about) is 08 sedans will be out LATER next year. they're not expecting any 08's any time soon. that was about 3 weeks ago

If a salesperson says a model year will come out in the same CALENDAR year, they truly have no clue.

How prevalent is the 2nd gear synchro problem?

I had the same problem with 3rd on my then brand new 2002 WRX and it went to the shop three different times in the first year before 10000 miles because the 3rd gear synchro ALWAYS crunched. Then when it started happening with 5th gear I got fed up with it and sold the car. Then I read the same thing happened to one that Car and Driver was road testing (http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...g35-sport.html) and now two people here complaining about it as well. I want a G35 within six months but if this is common I might reconsider.

I was at the dealership today getting ready to fine tune my order for a 2007 6MT sedan when my sales guy showed me the same article referring to the modification to the clutch engagement. I was told that an August order would result in a November delivery of a 2008 model and this was the earliest I could order. But another dealership in Dallas says a July order will result in a 2008 model so who really knows. I do think I will wait on the 2008 though, whichever date it may be.

Now we just need Infiniti to launch a service program retrofit 07 vehicles with the 08 clutch and tranny. How could we make that happen? An angry letter to Infiniti customer service from every 07 6MT owner, carbon copied to the NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/home.cfm) or equivalent Canadian regulatory body?

I saw that the 03 G35s had problems with undersized brakes, and apparently it was widespread enough that Infiniti came out with a fix. Anybody here involved with that issue? I wonder what percentage of customers complained on that one? Of course Infiniti might be more willing to provide a service program on an item that's more directly safety related and probably cheaper to replace, although swapping the brakes on every G35 must have cost a few dollars. At least with the 6MT we're only talking about no more than 10% of the total production run.

Keep up the pressure, get organized, get documentation!

I definitely think 07 owners should keep the heat up and get organized. The same thing happened with the 01-02 BMW M3. The first production run of the then new M3 had a defect on the bottom end of the engine. It was not a "BMW" issue but one with a third party supplier that supplied parts for the bottom end. The point is that hundreds of M3's around the world would have their engines spectacularly blow up at any time. BMW first blamed the owners saying they were over-revving the engines and not following the proper break in procedures but then a whole website dedicated to the issue was launched by angry owners who then sent all documentation to Autoweek. This BMW couldn't ignore and they fixed it for the later half of the 02 run and extended the warranties for all M3's made prior to the fix. If you all get that organized and get Autoweek or as many people involved as you can, Infiniti won't be able to ignore this. I know this is not as bad as an engine blowing up but it can still drive you insane, especially after paying 40K for the car. It will be interesting to see how Infiniti would react. Hopefully not like BMW which is scary, blaming all owners until they had no choice.
