Your cell phone should be capable of entering pauses followed by the password. It should just go through.

It's one thing to listen to your vmail on speaker, another to give away your pin number. Also, I can always switch it to the handset and/or hang up the phone if the vmail is too private.
Finally, there's a convenience to not having to press any additional buttons, say anything, etc.

When your Verizon VM system starts asking for passwords and prompts, switch to keyboard mode and input them manually via LCD touch screen. Hopefully your passengers are not watching you input the PIN on the big LCD!
