Window Tint and Clear Bra Deal

I have heard of guys paying up to $900 (yikes) just for having the 3M Clear Bra put on their cars.

I must have lucked out, as my friendly neighborhood tint shop is installing mine (all pre-cut for the '07 Sport, bought the kit off e-bay for $164 plus shipping) along with tinting the windows (said it's a "titanium" tint, a metallized film that's supposed to be their best quality tint that they regularly stock) for $200 smackers.

I did use them before for my wife's SUV as well as a Chrysler 300 I had before, and the thing that impressed me most was that they used a silicon wedge tool that turns down the tops of the rubber lips that are inside the door against window so that they can run the tint down into the top of the door. Other shops I have used in the past remove the whole door panel which takes longer and breaks whatever water repelling seal is created at the factory with that gooey sealing material between the panel and door. Plus in all cases but one, I have always had some kind of rattle or buzz from one or more of the doors afterward.

My appointment is this Monday morning (woo hoo) so I will report results Monday night, along with some photos if I can just learn how to post pictures by then...

DO NOT get metallized tint. It can interfere with bluetooth, GPS, and your i-key (possibly).

I went ceramic. It's more expensive, but since it's non conductive it doesn't cause any problems.

Also, about the silicon wedge thing... if they're a good shop, they'll remove the felt part of the window assembly (don't know the technical term) -- you know, the one that brushes the water off. You definately do not need to remove the panel.

No problems here with metallic tint. All electronics and sensors are workng fine. Everything is tinted except my windshield.

Interesting. I wasn't willing to try it with metallic. Good to know for others though. I've definately seen it cause problems in other cars though.

Thanks guys, for trying to provide helpful info regardless of whether the metallic tint applies to the electronic systems of our particular cars or not.

But yeah, these guys do not even have to remove that felt strip - they have some kind of straight silicon forming tool that is still soft enough that it doesn't damage or imprint onto anything, and it folds the felt strip down into the door while they run the bottom edge of the tint down under it, then they fold the felt strip right back up, all within a few minutes, no harm to anything. They have used up to four guys at one time per car (one per quadrant) and typically finish the average car in about an hour. This'll be my sixth automobile I've had tinted there and never a problem so far.

We'll see come Monday!

Hokay! Got it all done but when I went out to snap pictures I realized - what are they going to see? A black G35S with slightly darker windows? The 3M Bra is pretty undetectable except by feel, and even the one on my wife's white car is barely visible when scanning along the hood in person.

So...I'll wait till the chrome FX35 rims and 245/35 Nitto 555s are installed. The tires are here but as for the wheels, shipping seems to take forever from the mainland, July 9 was the ETA I got from FedEx...
