17" Wheels that fit on sports package for Winter

Hi guys I have recently bought a 07 G35s, however our winters are crazy (X was not an option as i WILL NOT waste my money on a Auto) I have been cruising the forums for a couple of hours just trying too find a straight forward answer. I am either going to buy a used 17" pair of wheels with winters or new ones, but i need to know what size fits over the sport brakes. Also what other cars have them? 05, 06 350Z?, 05 G35? Maxima, altima? This would be good so I can search Ebay. Canada Prices are stupid on tires. especially on 18s I have no idea. any straight forward help would be great. and should be added to the tires FAQ.

Just got today my 2007 G35S 6MT with the 18" wheels.
As soon as I got home, I made sure that my previous 17" 2004 Infiniti wheel/snow tires fit. They do fit with about 1/4" gap in the front between the wheel and the caliper. The tires are 225/55/17 WinterSport.

I borrowed 17" steel wheels with 17/55/225 tires this past winter for a month for my 07 G35S and they fit fine. I had a 16" winter wheel/tire setup for my 03 G but they wouldn't fit my 07 G. I am in the market for a dedicated winter setup now and plan on getting the same size setup that I borrowed from my buddy.

Why do you guys go a size smaller for winter wheels? Why not keep the stock 18" rims, throw some snow tires on them when the winter comes, and get yourself a set of aftermarket/better looking OEM rims with performance tires in time for Spring/Summer

I can't answer for anyone else, but for me it's because I like the 18" OEM wheels and 17" winter tires are significantly cheaper. And in all honesty, when you car is covered head to toe with salt, sand, and snow, how your wheels look doesn't really matter too much..........at least for me anyways.

As Garnet stated 17's are cheaper than 18s, both for tires and for rims and looks really are secondary when you're dealing with winter conditions.

The other big plus is running narrower tires. In snow, the rule of thumb is a more narrow tire will do better than a wider tire. A 225 width tire would do better in snow than a 245 tire. The 18x8.5 OEM rears on the G35S are just a tad too wide to handle a 225 well (range of 6-8").

Besides, I actually like the OEM 18" rims. While I've seen some nice aftermarket rims, I haven't seen any worth the extra money over the OEM 18s.

Thanks guys, thats what i wanted to hear. If anyone knows Winnipeg, thinner and smaller the wheel the better, not much places with worser winters than here.

BTW i have the only S in the Provence.

Can you please explain why narrower/smaller tires are better for traction in snow? I always figured that the wider/bigger the better because theres more tire on the ground = more traction, especially if you have winter tires.

Did you look into any OEM wheels? The M45 rims look great on the g, so do the 19" G coupe rims.

For all you guys with the sport package converting to the 17" wheels..........did you have any issues with your VDC or TPMS? I was considering the 07 Sedan with sport but only if I could put 17s on in order to be able to rotate. I'm done with the staggered setup after owning an 04 Coupe for 4 years and having all the issues with staggered tires.

Good article on tirerack about it. Obviously, you don't want to negatively impact dry/pavement tire performance, but going as thin as is safe is the best choice in the winter.

I have a 07 G35S 6MT. I wanted a touring tire so I swapped the 18" wheels for a set of 17" G35 Journey wheels and put on a set of Goodyear Eagle ResponseEdge touring tires. No issues with the Sport brakes or the VDC. I do not race the car so the 17" wheel / tire combo better suits my needs.

the thinner the tire is, allows for less snow to be stuck under it so it cuts through better and allows better movement.
