It didn't happen. It's pitted due to rocks on the highway (just like the rest of the front bumper).

Those definitely aren't covered under warranty. This didn't surprise me though.

I tried, and tried pretty hard (I know the GM at the dealership).

But, what do you expect? Since when are rock chips covered under warranty? It's one thing if the chrome bubbles up and starts peeling off for no reason, but if the damage is from road debris.......... you're fighting a losing battle. If for some reason the dealership DOES replace the grill, they're going above and beyond for you.
Well my car isn't covered with rock chips but my grill was pitted very badly. The dealer had to replace it because it was defective.
My last G35 had no grill pitting after 2 years of driving, and a lot of our 07s are pitting badly after a few months.

I finally got around to picking my replacement grille from my local Nissan dealership today. They offered to install it, but I figured I would do it myself since it would give me something to do. I'll probably put my old one back on once the winter months arrive. I was even thinking of having my old one sanded and painted GE to match the rest of my car just for the heck of it. But we'll see as I'm really not sure yet.
