What was that like? Did the engine just sputter and shut down? What did it sound like? I'm afraid to try, so, please let us know what happened.

It just stopped counting after a certain point.
once it reaches the 0 mark, it just goes to ---

the first time I saw this, I was like, crap, I gotta go pump some gas and I'm stuck in traffic! my friend told me to relax, the tank should have a reserve gallon or 2 lol

he was right, I beleive I ended up pumping 17-18 gallons or so.

the most I've pumped was 19 or so gallons. I was that low! lol

Yeah I think I pumped something around 17 gallons that time.

I've gone empty (well my friend) in a Honda Accord once. From what I could feel from the passenger seat, the car kinda jerked, heard some weird noise and the car just went limp.

I usually go a couple days after it goes below zero. I've filled it up with 19.5 gallons once but Ive also ran out of gas once.

I ran close to empty that one time. I was on a trip and was travelling all day for over 600kms. Normally I don't like to let my fuel get below half tank, I don't think it is good practice to do that..

So if you run out of gas you call roadside assisstance or whatever?

They don't charge you right? You just pay for the gas?

I have the roadside assistance card (I carry it even though it's under my dad's name) so I guess that could cause some trouble, lol.

0 miles is precisely the distance to the next gas station. Somewhat off topic, but:

1) Running out of gas causes your engine to run lean, which causes detonation. The engine computer is pretty sophisticated, so it won't happen for very long.

2) Whatever gunk might be at the very bottom of the gas tank runs through the fuel filter, and can gum it up. The fuel pump can also fail if runs without fuel in it.

3) Full fuel tanks also pick up less condensation; more of an issue for cold climates.

Three (probably) small risks, all easily avoided by filling your car as soon as convenient after hitting 0 miles.

End of pedantic rant. ;-)

if i recall correctly, i read somewhere in the owner's manual that at "E" you have a 1/2 gallon reserve. so if you were on the highway, id say about a 10 mile reserve more or less according to what i read.

my car's warning display will only go down to 9 miles left before the indicator shows " -- ".

This is not accurate - the manual actually says "There is a small reserve of fuel remaining in the tank when the fuel gauge reaches the empty (E) position." (and thanks to whoever posted the online version of the manual ).

As myself and others have stated, it's closer to two gallons.

When you're really low on gas the car might not start the first time. I learned it the hard way some cold morning

at zero there's definitely 2+ gallons left. I've hit it and gone another 10 miles and when I filled up it was only 17.5 gal. there's plenty of room in there. closer to 5 galons. I think the gage is calibrated for 15 gallons even though there is 20.5 of space in the tank when topped off.

The first time I test drove the new G, the screen said I only had 5 miles to empty. I made a comment to the salesman riding with me b/c I was afraid If I drove aggresively, we wouldn't make it back to the dealer. He told me not to worry and that the reserve will get you about 30 miles after it reads 0. I took his advice and test-drove the **** outa that car.
