Now I'm seeing another problem related to the bumper fit.... the plastic panel is not a flush fit with the headlight on both sides.

I have pics from the day I bought the car which show the same thing, so I'll talk to the dealer in a few days.

The Q ain't perfect... it has a similar problem where the plastic meets the metal on the front corner. But I bought the Q when it was 7 years old and I'm sure I've bumped it a few times myself.

On the G the plastic extends much higher on the front end, so it's really a design problem -- but helps sell more bumpers when the car gets dinged!

Greg, have you talked to your dealer and/or Infiniti customer relations? I would recommend calling the 800 infiniti number and having them open a case. So when you go to the dealer you can say infiniti is already aware and have a case open. Infiniti might even ask the dealer to repair it without you having to explain everything to them and prove that it was not caused by something you did.

I talked to the service manager today about dropping by tomorrow to look at it, and she said for this type of problem it's best if the lead service manager and sales manager look at it together, but one of them is off until end of next week, and then I'm on vacation for two weeks (so it'll be mid-July for an official answer). Sounds like it'll be hard to prove it wasn't the result of bumper damage unless I pointed it out in person a few days after picking up the car.

I may drop by tomorrow just to show the service manager and sales guy, and check out other sedans on the lot to see if they have the same problem.

Talked to service manager and sales guy today, and both of them saw my point. It helped that 2 of the 4 new G sedans and 1 of the 4 new G coupes in the front of the lot had the same problem: minor chipping of the paint between the two panels. The fit between the two panels was tighter on all of the cars, but the plastic bumper had a slight bulge over the curve in the center of the headlights (didn't fit flush).

Will report back in a few weeks.

Just got my car back from a week at the dealer. They tried to fix it in-house and had no luck, so I think they sent it to the body shop (or had a body shop guy come to the dealership). They tried to reposition the bumper so the gap between the two panels was consistent, but they said there was very little play in the design. It looks the same as before with the flaking paint touched up.

Service manager said there was a guy from corporate at the dealership for other matters who looked at it, said he'd seen the problem a few times before. (My loaner car had a perfect fit between the panels.)

I'll watch it for a few weeks and see how it holds up. If the paint starts chipping/flaking again I'll open a case with customer relations and lobby for a new bumper.

I have it as well, on a pre-owned '07. I'm getting mixed comments from mechanics and body shop pros on the vehicle - some say it looks like the bumpers have been replaced and repainted, others say its normal. Judging from the posts here, it looks like it is normal after all.

On a similar note, has anyone noticed, most especially those with PG exteriors, that the rear bumper color doesn't exactly match the rear panels/trunk lid paint?

On mine it sort of depends...when I walk up to it on my driveway, the bumper cover looks different at the bottom. But when you compare the paint colors of the parts that angle up (in other words, reflect sky), they match perfectly. So have never figured out if it's just that the angles are different enough between the bumper cover and quarter panel that the cover reflects different surrounds, or if there's actually a color diff.

My theory is that if it's that hard to tell on my car, it's probably not a problem

Exact same problem here...exact same place. I think it's the damned body flex that is doing it. Where are the GT SPEC mid chassis brace??

I can't wait till it's available to see if it makes a difference. If it does, maybe we can bill it back to Nissan. heh heh Kidding.

Update

I took my car to Infinity of Tysons Corner today. The service rep was Will. He took some pictures of the bumper and said the regional manager from Infiniti was stopping by today and he would show him the pictures. I pointed out that there were cars on the lot with the same problem and he agreed. Anyhow, the are going to have the paint shop repair the bumper on Tuesday. I hope they fix it, not just touch up the paint. My 2 cents.

WoW, I've never had this happen on my 2005 G35X. I just turned that car back in, it was a lease, and now I have a 2008 G35X. I only have 800 miles on the car but I am going to take pictures of it tonight when I get home from work and check to see the gap on the body panels. I'll be watching this and documenting with pictures. This is why I started leasing cars. Something always pops up that would ruin my day if I purchased the car.
