What is the little holder for in the center console?

Hey all.

Something I've been wondering about since I got my car a few months ago.

There is a little black plastic 'cup' (it's really long and flat) in the center console. It appears that it is meant to hold an iPod or loose change or anything that you would want to keep out of the depth of the center console.

I don't think the design is very good. If it's for an iPod there isn't anywhere to thread a cable through so that would appear to be an awkward placement.

If it's for change/coins, anything I put on there slides around and makes noise when I drive.

Also, it is a pretty flimsy fit to begin with. It's also removeable so I'm thinking of just taking it out as it pops out everytime I go to move my iPod around.

What are you guys using it for?

Maybe I'm just missing something.

Thanks!

Jay

Maybe its different on the auto's, but on my 6MT, there are 2 storage areas behind the shifter. One in front has a sliding top cover, and that is a cup holder or storage area, there is a little divider you can move forward or backward to either have a divided cupholder or open area and is hard plastic on the bottom. The rearmost "armrest" portion is felt lined and has the iPod connection and RCA connections. It has a hard plastic drop-in insert that is hard plastic and cup shaped that is...wait for it...a cupholder.

I have my motorcycle license in there since I cleaned out my wallet the other day since selling my bike, haha. I usually keep a pen and notepad there though.

I keep gum, a pen, my change holder and my extra garage door opener in the removable shelf thing in my console. And my Ipod and my cell phone charger are underneath.

Ok, so it's just a catch all. Albeit pretty poorly conceived.

For those of you storing cards, etc. in there, have you seen the card holder under the passenger side visor? I put my Costco card and one or two other gate entry cards.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'm just going to pull it. Doesn't make sense to put my phone or iPod there as the cord would have to sit over the top and it's a bad enough fit as it is.

Cheers!

what about drilling a hole, or cutting the side to make a place for the cord to fit into so that the ipod/iphone could sit there better? Maybe a poor idea, but it was the first thing i thought of when i saw it in the one i test drove...?? Otherwise, I'll take mine out.

I have an A/V cord that is coiled up and stored underneath. It runs up and sticks out to the console, where my touch sits.
I keep things in that little catch all... things like a tire pressure gauge, a few knives, my badge for work, gum, etc.
It looks like little thought went into designing the inside of that console, but it works for me.
