2008 G Oil Filter

Hey Everyone,

Would you recommend aftermarket oil filter or Infiniti OEM oil filter? The salesman who sold me the car told me THREE times that i MUST use OEM oil filter if i want my engine to last.

If u recommend after market, what brand and model number?

thanks!

He gave you a bunch of crap.

If you do a search, everyone agreed that the oem sucks. Get a Napa/Wix or, if you're feeling rich, a K&N/Amsoil.

Purolator Pure One from Amazon.com is a great deal on a very good filter. Free shipping if CONUS. If price is no object then Amsoil EA filter.

You don't have to use the oem filter. I feel aftermarket filters are better because the oem filters seem like they are made with like really cheap material. I personally would go with the K&N oil filter because they don't cost that much more.

Maybe ask the question to corporate Infiniti on the website..."by the way dealership xyz said to me three times that if I didn't use Infiniti filters that my engine would not last long. I am just checking is this true?"

I bet that the tech would've recomended Infiniti air & water if they were available.

The only fluid that is unique "sort of" is the Automatic transmission fluid, Nissan Matic-J. That is a warranty breaker if you use the wrong one and so far no confirmed aftermarket equivalent.

^^^^Not anymore there is a Matic-S and it is better than the -J for a same price.

Wow! Gotta google that right now. do you know if that is officially approved for use in '07+ G35? Are their any aftermarket companies making it yet?

Actually, sorry for the hijack everyone. I will just google it myself.

The dealer rep seems a bit overdramatic. However, I agree with him about using OEM oil filters.

As an automotive engine engineer I have found the "quality" of filters to be variable within OEM, Aftermarket, and between the two. Mostly due to the OEM vs SAE requirements. All filters basically meet SAE. OEM's can and usually exceed SAE requirements with their internal specifications. These "exceed requirements" details are not always replicated in aftermarket units thus allowing the cheaper prices. All filters should work fine as they are required to meet SAE, and if the filter is sold elsewhere, other national regulations. Even at my company, our filter supplier would use a cheaper filter media for their aftermarket versions.

I haven't really looked into the OEM VQ filter too much. I just figure I will ONLY use OEM given the minor price differential ($8 filter vs what? on a $8000 motor)and likely higher build specification/requirements enforced by Nissan. Those VQ engine engineers are no joke, they got paid big money for years to engineer this oiling system with this filter, and not to mention all the rewards this engine has behind it. So if they decided to specify this filter then I am going to use it.

Of course, if I am going to go full on racing or start doing big mods I would investigate further as I would probably be altering the oiling system.

I read that one through myself. Interesting points made, but it did not convince me that the OEM filter is worse than the Mobil-1 or other brand. There are obvious structural difference visible in the photos which I can understand being important if the filter served some structural function. I guess I didn't notice any specific performance information for any of the filters used on the VQ so I will stick with the OEM filter. My exposure to aerospace engineering causes me to like the fact that Nissan sticks with the uncool fiber reinforced composite material called cardboard, since it works, why change it. (I think it is cool anyway.)

BTW a lot of those big new wind turbines you see out there are Basla wood and fiberglass. Nothing more high tech than my model airplanes I built 10+ years ago. WELL they are about 1000x the size so I am sure there is a bit more too them.

Still I guess you could say that I am relying on my assumption that the bean counting marketeers didn't change something between those VQ engineers and me with regard to the current OEM filter specification.
