Perhaps the rest of your car grew darker over ~2 years of exposure to the elements, polishing, waxing products?

Then the shop has to paintmatch whatever color it is now; they can't just go with the same stock color on a panel and then tell you that "that's what it ought to look like when new". Now that I think about it, I am probably going to stay with the body shop that did my original job through insurnace since they a great job colormatching (although they charge more than others) as there seems to be a lot of shop hit-or-miss re. being able to properly colormatch.
