Traded my '07 G35S 5AT for '10 G37xS
#16
I'm not understanding your justification on that math....you still lost every penny in depreciation between your 07's selling price and the trade-in as well as now are going to pay sales tax on the difference between 21k and 39k... But I don't want to ruin the excitement of the new buy, so again, congratulations.
The difference is, I don't see the difference between my '07s selling price and trade-in as a loss. I see it as payment for the fun and utility I've had from driving my '07 . I see car payments as a perpetual thing, i.e. I always put aside ~$500/mo for a car, whether or not I have a car payment. Because if I don't have a car payment, that money goes to savings for when I do get a new car

1:
trade in 07 for 10: 39k - 21k = 18k + TTL
trade in 10 for 13: 41k - 22k = 19k + TTL
Total pay = 37k + TTL
2:
Keep the 07 for another 3 years and then trade in for a 13:
41k - 9k = 32K + 2K for tires + 1K for brakes, filters, wipers = 35K +TTL + possible repairs not covered by warranty.

...I read some pretty screwy comments on tirerack about the OEM tires, and I think they're fine in the snow. and crap we're getting dumped on us right now in the twin cities. The car definitely has a certain confidence on launch and lane changes that my '07 with Pilot Alpin PA2s didn't have in this slushy crap. Stopping definitely isn't as good as the PA2s were, but they're decent enough. I'm probably going to get 17s and snows next year though because the 18s are a bit more jarring with all the potholes out there right now...
Did the tirerack OEM tire comments come from people that had these tires on an AWD/4WD vehicle. That could make a big difference in there opinions. I used the OEMs for my first winter too and they where fine but by the next winter I was into the Blizzaks. Stopping is the key!

#2 will likely include another set of tire changes though, as my '07 went 3 years on my first set of snows and summers, and I actually drive more than I did for most of my '07 ownership, so I will definitely need one more snow/summer set before '13 So add 2k to that.
Assuming decent reliability, it's pretty close to a wash (we're talking a couple grand difference spread across 6 years).

In scenario #1 that's 2x TTL vs a single TTL in #2.

#1 You only need to pay tax on the portion that you use in most stats except in a couple states like CA. So, you pay tax on the first 18k and then the second 19k v. #2 you pay tax only once but on 35k. Yes, you will pay for title and license fees twice but they are minimal, about $140 in PA.
