Rear deck rattle/buzz

O.K.
I've been dealing with this since day 2 of ownership, and not only is my wife tired of me complaining about it, I'm on the verge of pulling my hair out over this.

I've seen a few complaints on this forum about a buzz type noise coming from the rear deck, and want to know if anybody has figured this out yet.

The dealer has torn the rear seat out, and put sound dampening in the rear deck but to no avail.

I've put rubber dampeners at the mounting points for the amps. I've torn the seatbelt mechanism apart and stabilized the steel ball that seems to buzz around in the casing, I've stuffed insulation in the seat belt trim pieces. I've tapped around just about gotten rid of any rattle or squeek that I hear back there. I've even secured the aluminum exhaust flashing at the exhaust exits, Yet this intermittent rattle/buzz won't go away.

I've realized that it mostly happens when the car has been sitting in direct sunlight. It doesn't need to be hot out as it happens at 30* or 70*. It doesn't happen all the time, and when it does, it is almost impossible to make it happen, it just does it at it's own will. It seems to be behind the drivers side passenger seat on the rear deck, but I can't pinpoint it from the drivers seat. It happens mainly while driving over rough undulations in the road and is an instant noise. It sounds like tapping on an empty aluminum can but not harsh and that is why I say buzz.

I know, you guys might be thinking that I'm OCD, but I assure you, I take no drugs.

I'm looking for people to throw ideas out as I've exhausted all of mine.

I have the same issue and for me, the problem is actually from the upper part of the trunk. Open up your trunk, and look upwards all the way in. The carpet or whatever that's called is supposed to be tightly stuck and shouldn't move up/down but sometimes it loosens up and rattles when going over potholes or turning up the volume on the radio.

Are you talking about the molded piece of plastic that is covered in carpet and hides the speaker/amp, or the actual deck lid that is covered in carpet?

I took my car to the dealership about the same issue couple of weeks ago. They told me that the problem is not with the rear deck but some seatbelt mechanism under the rear seat. I am still waiting on the part to arrive.

I am hoping that this will fix the rear deck noise for good.

Good luck & keep us posted.

+1 on going in to the trunk. I had a rattle when the bass was up, or going over bumps. Where the speaker/amp cover and the side/carpeted covers meet, they will sometimes rattle. I used some double-sided tape to secure the amp/speaker cover, and stuffed some carpeting material in to the gap between the two panels to eliminate the rattle.

Please update what they did, and if it worked.

UPDATE:

For quite sometime, I've been experiencing horrible rattle/buzzing coming from the rear deck area as well. I couldn't pin point exactly which side it was coming from but for sure it was coming from the rear deck somewhere. The noise was more noticeable when I would go over uneven pavements. At first it would only occur sporadically but later it became so bad that I was pullin my hair out everytime I had to drive my car. It was even embarrassing to have passenger sit in the back seat.

Anyway, I took my car to the dealership today after they called me that the part which they ordered finally had arrived. They replaced the rear seat belts from both sides because they found that something in the seatbelt was actually causing these rattles. I was very skeptical b/c for sure I was hearing something from the rear deck and not the seat belts. Anyway, the tech replaced everything in about 2 hrs while I waited. Once he was done, we went for a test drive to see if the noise was still prevalent. We drove for few miles and the rattling noise was gone!!!

Anyway, I recommend that you ask them about the rear seatbelts. I am not certain, but the problem you are having sounds very simliar to what I was experiencing.

Good luck w/ the fix!

It's a little steel ball that rattles around in a small housing. I've taken my center seatbelt apart, and taken that ball out but now the seatbelt doesn't lock when forward force is applied. I'd hate to disable this safety feature on the other 2 outer belts. Did they give you a part number on the seat belts?

I have this problem too. It has to be the most obnoxious rattle that I've ever heard in a car, and that is no joke. It sounds like I have a beer can with a penny in it. Sometimes, it will just rattle/buzz non-stop, even if I'm sitting still. The very small amount of engine vibration at idle is enough to make it buzz at times. I can even hear it over my radio unless I have it turned up to ear bleeding levels. My 7 and 8 year old are complaining about it, not to mention my wife. The dealer already fixed a rattle that I had in the rear deck, but this seems like a different problem. I plan to take it back to the dealer here in the next few weeks. Mine also seems to be coming from the upper driver side of the rear deck. I can handle a rattle or two, but this is like the mother of all rattles, I can't even emphasize how horrible it is.

I'm 99% sure that I have resolved the issue.

I took the blow molded carpet cover off the truck lid, and have had it off for 3 weeks now. I even took a 300 mile trip last weekend and didn't hear the noise.
It was intermittent before, so I keep waiting to hear it again and will update if I do.

I know this is an old thread but I have an intermittent noise and sounds like two aluminum flashlights tapping against each other. Sounds as if it's coming from the rear deck. Wondering if you folks heard that kind of noise?

The damn noise is driving me crazy.

ha ha. I have the 07 coupe but have a wierd rattling noise coming from the rear going over bumps, rough roads. been trying to pin point it for like 2 years. Im going to ride in the back and listen one more time for the noise. Then im going to start disassembling the whole rear deck, c-pillar, etc. I am going to try and listen for the defogger rattle too. Good idea to resurrect this thread, when I get the results of my disassembly I'll post the fixes or findings. I love this car to death but this one rattle, yeah, annoying.

A couple of weekends ago I took all the rear panels, seats, and rear deck out to search for this rattle. I used dynomat and silcone and epoxy to dampen and quiet any noises. After every section was gone through very extensively (3 day process on/off) I would test drive to see if I isolated the noise. I even was under the car for 1/2 hr tapping with a rubber mallet to rule chassis/suspension out. To this day I still have the tapping noise going over cracks/bumps. Im guessing it is a spot weld in an unreachable spot somewhere that has come loose. (I autocross and track so Im sure I flexed the chassis enough to tweak a panel??) Im thinking its coming from a cracked weld unreachable behind the passenger seat/rear deck area. Oh well I gave it a shot, if anyone has input on possible weak welds in rear area or any ideas feel free to post.
