Besides performance, are there any advantages to winter/summer tire setup? I'm thinking about buying new wheels for my g35x sedan and selling the stock wheels...but my friend is tryign to convince me to keep the stock wheels for winter and use the new ones most of the year. I'm wondering if it's worth losing the $600+ or so I can probably get for my old wheels and tires for this purpose. I'm not worried so much about performance...traction is good in AWD and I was thinking about getting some 18 or 19" wheels with all weather tires.

Because all seasons do everthing okay but nothing specifically well.

I run all seaons now (michelin sport pilot A/S) because of the treadwear rating of 400. But I can tell the summer grip is down vs the pilot sports (summer tires) I had before. It's noticable.

But I have a dedicated set of 17s on Blizzaks for my RWD sedan. There's no way I could run the snow on summers and I'm not sure about these A/S tires when it snows.

How bout wear-wise. Will summer tires wear less quickly than all season t ires in the summer? And will winter tires wear less quickly than all season tires in the winter?

I'm wondering more in regards to whether something will make the $600 investment worthwhile...

How much snowy weather do you get? I have my stock 18's with snow tires on them. I live in MD and we usually dont get much snow but we got pounded this past season.

Summer tires wear out much faster than all season tires. The lower the treadwear rating means the quicker they wear out. A summer tire wont grip the road too well in the winter because of the cold temperatures (again, varying on where you live).

Summer tires usually offer the best performance with softer rubber while sacrificing tread life, sound, and comfort, while some give up wet traction too.
The better ones offer great performance, decent tread life, while not being too loud or uncomfy, and have decent wet traction - perfect for Cali winters! But be prepared to pay for it...
