Tach stuck at 1000rpm with car off...

I was tooting along today coming home and I noticed at the red light that my car was idling at 2000rpm. Totally freaked me out so I turned off the radio but didn't feel or sound like I was idling at 2k. So I turned off the car and sure enough rpm gauge only goes down to 1k. I only have 5000miles on my 07 so I still have plenty of warranty to go, but has anyone experienced this?

So far, my 07 had to go in for sunroof motor and accordion replacement both under warranty now the tach. I'm glad I have warranty.

Same problem...it only happens to me under hot weather though...the dealer replaced my gauge cluster under warranty, but ended up scratching the clearcoat cover over it...so I am getting that replaced next week.

weird, I drove the car again at night and it's back to normal. When it was doing it the outside temp was reading 97` so hot weather must do something to the gauge...

This exact same thing has happened to me twice now in about a 2 month span. Both times it happened to me I noticed my RPM's were showing about 3800 going around 60. I was a little worried and wondered if it was stuck in fourth gear or something. But i too noticed that when i shut it off the needle would get stuck at 1000 RPM. These cars have some unique quirks.

Definitely going to opt for the extended warranty when mine runs out...

I brought it to the dealer last week and they replaced the whole gauge cluster. I think the problem is that the heat causes the metal to expand inside the needle, which causes it to get stuck at certain numbers when turned off...

I think this problem occurs in many G's...but I'm guessing most drivers don't really notice this unless they're really looking at it.

This problem only occurred for me when temperature read above 90-95F...When you allow the car and gauges to heat up, it causes expansion. However, this isn't supposed to be normal. I'm guessing it will happen again even after my gauges were replaced...

There is a reset for the guage cluster. With the ignition off, press and hold the trip reset button, then turn the key on and continue to hold it. When the odometer blinks let go of the button. Press it again and reset will appear. The guages will go nuts and come back to zero. If the needle drops under zero or this does not solve the problem then you have to replace the cluster.

You do know that this will probably not solve anything right? Reason being that this only happens in the heat, but not in the cold. Specifically, it happens when the temperature is at least 95 degrees.

That leads me to conclude that this will not solve the problem people are having.

If you haven't tried it, why negate the reset option? You did claim it happens once in a while, why not do this and save the troubles going to the dealership and have it happen again with a new cluster

If you're out of warranty, it's worth a shot. If you're still under warranty, I would prefer to get a replacement instead of trying to "fix" it by resetting it.

At that time I was still under warranty, but honestly, I don't think the reset option would work. It gets stuck not because of the tach malfunctioning. It is due to the part inside the needle expanding so a reset won't fix that if it's a physical problem.

Heat especially in 95 degree weather with the sun shining down onto the tach will cause plastic components to expand. This isn't a software malfunction; it is a hardware malfunction so any type of software "fix" won't solve the issue.

Sorry, but if I can save a few bucks by doing something myself rather than going to the dealership. I will do it. My 2007 G is out of warranty. I had experienced the problem of the tach getting stuck on 3000rpm. It was still stuck when it was not hot outside. I did a reset and it fixed my problem. Hopefully it will work for others.

Its from the heat. I have the same issue when leaving the car in direct sun. after I drive with the AC on for a while, it goes back to normal. Sad that our cars are so nice, but have so many issues.

^ but not everyone has this issue which confuses me, having had my car for over 5 years now and driving in temps over 104F at times with heat index over 115-120 iv never had this problem, in summer we always average over 93. What kind of temps are you guys seeing in your area? that might help understand this issue better

That's what I wrote. I said if your car is out of warranty, it's worth a shot trying this. However, for my problem and for others, it seems that only HEAT causes this, not some software glitch.

A reset will not fix this type of issue if it's only due to heat. Not only that, the sun has to be also beating down on the tach. The issue goes away too once your car cools so I'm pretty sure your issue will come back again. It's not a permanent fix. It may have fixed itself once your car cooled down when you're doing the reset procedure.

I guess your problem is completely different than the problems others have here, because it usually goes away once the car cools down.

When mine happened, it was when the temps were at least in the mid-90's. Plus, the sun had to be shining at the tach itself to make it heat up quicker and cause problems. Even if you parked it in the shade at high temps, the issue doesn't happen.

Even after driving and the interior started cooling down, the tach went back to normal. The dealer had to have it in the sun for a couple hours to see this issue.
