want to buy a car in Minnetonka Minnesota but from New Jersey
I am located in new jersey and would like to purchase a car in Minnetonka Minnesota . i am afraid that if i fly out there and not like the car i am stuck with paying for a flight back which i had already done 2 weeks ago and did not like the car and flew all the way back. i was wondering if someone that lives in that area can take a look at a car for me. PM me and i will get you the dealerships name and address. i greatly appreciate if anyone would help me out with this. thank you
Boris,
Is the car at a dealership or is it a private individual selling the car? If a private individual, I'd ask them to do a close-up video taping of the car, inside and out. Have them start the car so you can hear it run. After you get a general idea of the car's condition, I would have them re-tape any areas you are suspicious about. I doubt a dealer would do this for you.
This certainly isn't a foolproof way of insuring a car's condition, but it might help you decide whether the car is worth a plane ticket.
Having someone look at it is a good idea. But then you are still relying on someone else's opinion. What they think is not a big deal, you may see as a deal-breaker! Plus I doubt you'll have any takers. Personally, I think you're asking a lot to have someone take time out of their day to travel to see a car for someone they don't know to see a car they aren't interested in buying. You may want to sweeten the deal with at least gas money!
Good luck. I live in a neighboring state (Wisconsin) and bought a car in Minnesota. The car's condition was slightly misrepresented, but not enough for me to walk away.

it is at a dealer. i was looking at some pictures and everything looks fine excpet a pic of the engine compartment. there is usually 2 stickers on the radiator fan and this one only has 1, so im not sure if it was in an accident or what or the original just removed it. also there are some brackets that look like they are rusted so im thinking it was a front end accident or im just wrong. carfax says clean but that does not always tell the story. i would def pay for someone to go out there and take a look at the car.
If I were you, I'd walk away. Given the distance you need to travel, any hesitation you have would be reason to keep looking. What year are you looking to buy? Options? Color? Price range? Maybe I'll sell you mine.
I bought a car in MI and had it shipped to TX. I had a lot of the same reservations you did. There are inspection companies that will go to the seller, check out the car, and send you back a report with pics. That should help you be more at ease.
This has been about 5 years ago, but it was around $100 then. And you could ask them to check out any specific areas. They couldn't do a full mechanical inspection, but they did drive it and make sure everything checked out OK.
ETA: Some quick Googling turned up these cats: http://autoinspectionservices.net/ $125 and it takes 2 - 3 days.
