air filter differences

'bob is the oil guy' has a decent write-up comparing filtration and flow on various filters (paper, foam, gauze (k&n)).
link
k&n had the best flow, paper had best filtration, but it's marginal stuff. it's a good starting point for your own investigations anyway. personally i'm sticking with the stock filters.

Everyone swears by their choice of aftermarket product, whether Air filter/ CAI/Exhaust. Bottomline is NONE of these aftermarket manufacturers have the resources or facilities to do the extensive R&D it takes to really prove that their product is indeed superior.
We however, are not really interested in a superior product, just the illusion of such. Mod on

I have used K&N's for years in various vehicles from sports cars to SUV's. They do make a difference. I noticed an immediate increase in gas mileage from 1-2mpg. They also make the intake breathe better. For our cars two are needed so yes it is an initial investment. The other plus is as they get dirty they actually work better. (I know it seems odd) Finally you will never need to replace them but just clean them every 50k or so depending on your driving climate. I avg. around 22mpg with a 50/50 mix of driving and I hammer it on the highway. It really comes down to your budget and preference. A standard filter will work fine and you can save the up-front cost of a K&N. I am sure you will get all kinds of opinions as some swear by K&N's and some don't. Whatever you do just make sure you change them.
When you say the G requires 2 air filters, are you referring to the panel ail filter for the intake and the cabin air filter, or 2 air filters for the intake ?!
I hope it's not the latter...

K&N lets more air through which is good but also lets more contaminents into that area, thus your TB's get dirtier quicker. I was a huge fan of their drop in filters until I purchased the G and found out they were $50-60 a pop x2, much different than a single $35 for my previous car. I just can't justify the $ for a perceived difference in performance/mileage. I have yet to find any imperical evidence from anyone regarding a meaningful improvement in hp or mpg

Gerbilunit makes a strong point. Just depends if you want to continually buy paper filters and replace or spend more upfront and keep for the long haul. Either way the OEM intake on the G35 Gen II is a pretty good set up. We have a QX56 and the the intake on that is a joke. The airbox pulls air in through the wheel well and into a small pipe that runs the airbox. So basically 3/4 of the airbox and filter never get used. (Restricting) There is a mod for it thankfully. I wasn't thrilled with the mpg of the G initially, but after the QX56 my G is like a hybrid!

I think most of the comparisons have been with inside the engine bay air boxes and open filters. I think the true CAI's are proven to improve airflow and be less restrictive. I'm running twin Injen tuned SP1997's and not only does it sound amazing I'm getting roughly 3pmg more than before, as long as I keep my foot out of it. It did seem to reduce some of the lower end torque but produces better at the high end. Just my opinion.
