Buying Used - 2007 G35x at 90,000 miles

Background story: I used to drive a 2005 G35 6MT, last Winter I let a friend borrow it and it ended up getting totalled (other party was at fault) - So I've been without a car for some time and have now decided it is time to look again.

I've recently come across a 2007 G35x with 90,000 miles on the clock. The owner says he is a commuter which explains such a high mileage in a short period of time. He has all maintenance and service records through the dealership and has recently changed the brakes and rotors.

At 90,000 miles in these last few years, what problems should I be looking for and if I do decide to buy the car, what problems should I expect?

The car is priced low enough that I have no problem shelling out a few grand on repairs in the next few years. Some of my other options are 05/06 G35's with less mileage, the Acura TSX/TL, and Audi A4.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My GF has a 2005 and although I like her car I think the 2nd gens are WAY better.

Stronger engine, better interior, more fun toys with Nav and harddrive music, dual zenons, slightly different handling (lighter than your version). Brakes are way better than the 1st gens. They last longer although not by much and I think they stop better.

Have you driven a 2nd gen yet? Its a nicer car IMO.

But as far as the 90k goes.. I dont know of anything that is super serious. I would ask for maintenance records as the normal fluid changes and belt changes are important.

The interior of these cars tends to scratch, the paint is crap, and some people are having shaking issue with their steering.

Beyond that it is pretty much the same reliability as your 05.

I dont know what your price point is, but the 07's are pretty cheap around here in the low 20's.. one with 90k would be in the mid to high teens if I am guessing right.

I like the A4 but from what I hear they can be a maintenace $ hog. The TL and TSX are nice but they are FWD...

Good luck.

Yep, the price is almost too good to pass up on; considerably below $15,000 and I am definitely going to try and see if I can get it lower, especially considering the mileage.

I was just wondering if anyone was already up around this high mileage that could provide some insight.

Under 15 grand I would be EXTREMELY suspicious that its a scam even with such high mileage! Have you actually met the owner in person?

I'm sure you already know this but make sure to take it to a mechanic before buying it so he can make somewhat sure that its mechanically sound

Yes, I planned on taking it to a local mechanic when I test drive it. I am very familiar with the auto scams that have been popping up in recent years and this one definitely seems legitimate. I haven't met the owner in person but I have an idea of who he is and I have spoken with him on the phone.. everything seems to check out thus far. I guess even at under $15k I should make an offer immediately after inspection and test driving; I fear that a lot of people are going to be interested at such a low price.

this is damn cheap for a 2nd gen, i paid my G35X 07 19.5k with 115 000 km this winter and though that was a good deal!

I would make sure AUTOCHECK is clean and forward me the vin and i can confirm. Couple members have got vehicles that have been clean carfax but have either frame damage or small accidents. Take it to a body shop since when i checked the four or five cheapest G35x all of them had frame damage. Pull service records from the dealer and see what maintenance has been done and what is recommend. Check out the suspension bushings since it is hitting 100k miles. Make sure fluids and belts are done including spark plugs if not that is on you.

Here is some searches i did. Dealer in TN has a bunch of nice infiniti that have hail damage for really nice prices.

Mines an '08 with 95k. Transmission flush, serpentine, brakes and rotors, and cabin filter. Drives like when I first bought it. I even had 2 accidents in the rear and 1 in the front (light bumper hit, mine was a scratch other car had more damages).

Decided against it...hope I made the right choice. Probably going with an '04 A4 with 55k for around $12k.. Another huge putoff with the car was that it was an automatic. Having driven manual cars my whole life I found it to be a very lifeless experience. The car is definitely very very nice and powerful, though.

All x's are automatic, I own an 07 G35x that I bought last year with 97K miles on the oddometer for $15K. Now I have 118K miles on it and it still runs like a champ. I took it to a local mechanic within a week of purchase for a full checkup and he replaced the transmission fluid, serpentine belt and flushed the radiator. All the other fluids were fine, including the transfer cases. I replaced the brakes on it a few months back and that eliminated the brake judder that was present. All in all I am very happy with a purchase.

Just my personal opinion, but stay away from Audis, they are great cars but extremely high maintenance. Go with the TSX, it get great gas mileage and is very well made. Another car to consider is the Lexus IS. Good luck.
