Non-bose sedan: New door speakers vs. new subwoofer. Which would do the most good?

I have the base sedan. Non-bose. The speakers aren't bad, per se. They are just "fine." The bass is pretty shoddy, and you can't control the midrange.

Anyway, I'm thinking of cheap modifications I can do to my car. I've done a couple (which I'll post pics of tonight). I think I'd like to improve the speaker system in my sedan.

So, I don't want to revamp it all at once. To audiophiles out there, what would give me more bang for my buck?

1) 4 new door speakers, no sub.
2) Keep stock door speakers, add a sub to the trunk.

Just curious. There might not really be an answer.

By the way, I'm not going to be playing any thumping music, that's not why I would want a sub. I just want to improve the overall quality of the music. I love that sustained rich sound that good systems have when playing horns, etc. Sustained bass with no boom, I guess.

Thanks.

Later.

Shouldn't you get a new amp first?

If you dont care much for big bass system then just upgrade the speakers ... I want to do that to mine ... stock ones just dont sound so good when i go up in volume feels like they want to explode. yes they do sound nice but could use an upgrade ...
then later on i would add a small sub ..

If you are not going to amplify the speakers, make sure you get speakers that are very efficient. Maybe 90db and up sensitivity. I know some Focal's are very efficient.

Maybe even throw in a Infinity Basslink amplified subwoofer. They run pretty cheap.

You don't really have to spend a lot to get decent sound.

So you can replace the speakers in a non-bose G w/out problem? I guess I had it in my head that you had to replace the whole head unit.

No help here but I have a Bose setup and plan to throw in this sub. I need to take up minimal space and want to retain stock headunit. I use the trunk for my baby boi's stroller and my other crap (Groceries, Car stuff, Bags...etc). I plan to reduce the Bass going to the front doors and increase the gain on the amp to keep the music clear at higher volumes. You can use 125hz bass blockers to help get rid off bass to the door speakers for non-bose. Not so sure about bose since it has an amplifier built in and can be slightly tricky. I plan to overhaul the audio down the road similar to what I have done in my previous cars.

Also available 10"

Interesting, thank you! So you're proposing the best solution is a sub with bass blockers going to the factory speakers? That is not something I had thought of.

be careful with the bass system because they will overpower your speakers and you wont hear crap...

I think tuning is key to any install. My #1 saying is not how much you spend on the parts but how well you install it and tune it. Who ever did you install or what ever system you heard was just slapped together and never tuned correctly with a mic/meter. I spend a lot of time installing and fine tuning to make the bass blend with the music and work with imaging especially on 3 way component setup.

I have used components like

Pyle, Rockford, Hertz, Focal, Dynaudio, Mbquartz, Diamond, PPI, JL, Audiobahn and everything in between. With all those products install was key to making the final outcome ....BLISS.

I had a company suv with a pretty crappy stereo. I had old system parts laying around so I went ahead and installed my old Class D amp with speaker splice inputs from just two speakers (instead of RCA's) and a single 12" kicker sub. Left the head unit and speakers stock. I didn't have the gain cranked to avoid over powering the speakers. Having deep bass at low volume made it sound much better. And then I could keep the bass going to the stock speakers low and crank it to still have clear/loud bass without destroying the paper speakers.

If you replace the speakers without amplification then you're going to lose a lot of bass while gaining crisp and clear highs unless you are careful picking the proper sensitivity level.

This is what I put in mine. I have the "Studio on wheels". I upgraded the tweeters and added 2 subs with a JL Audio 600 watt amp. Sounds awesome!

I think I've decided to go with new 6.5" compenent speakers in the front doors.

Eventually I'll get an amp sub, sub-box in the trunk, and block the base to rear door speakers and keep them stock.

But for now, just some quality front door.

The front door speakers are 6.5" for the non-bose sedans, right?? Don't want to go buy the wrong thing.

Components up front, Amp, and Sub. Don't waste your time with the rear speakers.

Yes the non-bose fronts are 6.5"

Here's my set up:
