Engine Air Filter Question
Engine Air Filter Question
I checked my Engine air filters on my 07 g35x and found the passenger side one pretty dirty with oil all over it. The drivers side looked fine with only some small debri in the folds. No idea when the last time they have been changed as I just purchased the car a couple weeks ago. I did drive it 1k miles back from texas to my home in Ohio. What a fantastic ride home!! (except arkanasas, no offense but your roads suck).
Question:
1.) Does the above description present a possible problem(1 being filthy and the other looking good)?

No, not necessarily. At least not since you don't know the history of the vehicle's usage. It could that the previous owner commuted in stop and go traffic behind a diesel truck or something; there's no telling. If aren't going to swap them out right away, you could simply swap them from one side to the other and see if it still builds up on the passenger side. I wouldn't worry, but in the future I would just monitor it to be sure there isn't anything goofy going on.
I searched and saw some pics on here. My one looks about like the ones below. I was just wondering why one of mine is almost clean and the other is filthy.
Not my filters

IDK, maybe the air on the side closer to the shoulder of the road is just dirtier than the air closer to the center of the road . . . who knows? Just monitor it in the future; it's pretty much all you can do.
Thanks for the responses. I will change them today. I found some fram at our local auto store.
I did drive back 1k miles through texas and arkansas. Both areas were dusty and had red clay all over. I was just worried because it was oily.
Thanks again

EWWW!! Definitely NOT your best choice! I'd recommend going with a WIX (or Napa Gold is same thing) or an original equipment replacement (NIssan/Infiniti).

They didn't have fram in stock so I ended up going with the wic.
They were only $10ish a piece. I also picked up a cabin filter for $19. I am going to put some miles on them and check them both regularly. I used KN in my Porsche and never had a problem with them and they were easy to clean. Thank god I don't have an earlier model of the G series as those look like a pain in the *** to take out.

Before i went with an SRI, the original and replacement OEM filters were somewhat oily as well. Even with my old Nissan, at times the OEM filters were of the dry type, other times i receive the oily version.

At $20 for 2 of the wix, I will just changed them yearly. I guess the oil substance I was concerned with was on the intake side of one of my filter. The other had no substance on it.
Thanks, for the info. I will check these weekly to make sure there isn't an underlying problem
Side note: How do I know if I have a 2nd gen or whatever of my car? is it in the vin or somewhere on my car?

LOL, yeah but it is confusing on here with the different rooms. Some say Gen 2... I bought / Stole a 2007 G35x. I just see two different engine codes when I was checking for filters on the online sites.
Side note: Is it just me or is this thing damn responsive when you tap on the accelerator? I mean, watch out in the parking garages
