moon roof will not close.. anyone else ever have this problem?

i went on a road trip to LA over the weekend.. i was crusing sunset and i wanted to open up my moonroof (which i rarely use).. i press the button to crack it open and i hear a loud mechanical sound far from normal..

it opened to tilt.. but when i tried to close it and it would not respond.. at first all i heard was a loud jolt everytime i pressed the button

on my way home i tried to close it again.. and now i can hear it actually trying to close but still no bueno

so right now it is stuck on TILT..

has anyone else had this problem before? how much do you think it would cost for the dealer to fix? (warranty expired)

Search "stuck sunroof" or similar, a few ppl have had this problem and its apparently a screw that comes loose or off and needs to be put back into the frame

Cool faulty mmon roof

Ya hes right. the motor mount screws come lose so the gear doesnt grab properly. just pull out the light fixture and tighten those three bolts above. worst case, youll have to grab an allen key to maually twist the roof closed if the switch has stoppd working (like mine did) until you can fix or replace that part. youll have to crank the allen key pretty hard so dont be afraid. This just happened to me last week. Same thing, according to the dealer - nuts came loose and the motor detached. They ended up charging me $350 to retighten the bolts and put loctite on them. They told me they had to pull the entire headliner off first just to get to it and "evaluate the problem". BS!

$350 Ouch!! its done and dusted now but for future its not hard fix but needs time, just follow this nice DIY from MrRage and save yourself $$. Many have just tightened the screw by pulling down on the liner without removing it like he did in diy but that would be possible if the screw hasnt fallen off into the liner
