Anyone ever have this happen..i got to 0 miles left once...took me 5 more miles to gas station. Is there a reserve tank or say an extra 1-2 gal it doesn't count until you reach 0?

On top gear the TT Jag Jeremy goes 700 miles in..has like 2-3 more gallons in it as a reserve

0 isn't 0, I hit zero before and still drove easily to a gas station. Iirc, when I filled it only took 17 or 18 gallons, which is less than capacity

Just throw a one gallon gas can in your trunk and get to testin'.

Modern cars are typically engineered so that when the gas gauge reaches empty, they still have a 2 gallon reserve in the tank to keep the in-tank fuel pump cool. (and to allow you to make it to a gas station) So when you reach 0 miles, you should be able to go an additional 30 or 40 miles before running out. If you ever arrive at the gas station right as you reach 0 miles, take note of how many gallons it takes to fill up and then subtract that from the total volume of the tank in your owners manual.

One thing to note, because the in-tank fuel pump is cooled by the gasoline in the tank, the fastest way to burn up your fuel pump is to run the tank super low often.

Yup I've driven 15 more miles when the - - - - showed up. Don't know what it would have taken to run out, but I only put 18.? Gals when i stopped. I don't think it ever says "0" just a series of dashes.

I only seen one person go the distant and when he filled up we was at 19.988. Around that.

The G's reserve is about 4 gallons. We have a 20 gallon tank and when the red light stays on, i usually pump about 16 gallons in to fill it up.

LOL... I was really close to that once. And it cost me like $96 to fill it up cuz gas was like $4+ at that point. I have the pic on my old cell phone somewhere.

I always keep extremely close monitoring of my gas usage. Not so much because I care about it, but more as just a force of habit (OCD ??). As a rule, I always fill the tank completely, I keep every receipt for every drop I ever put in the car as well as odometer recordings at each fill-up, and miles since last fill-up (trip meter and mpg are reset every time).

Anyway, on a few occasions, I've actually put over 20 in before ( 20.3 i think), but that was undoubtedly overfilling it. It never overflowed, but it must have been awfully close. Because I monitor it so close, and I always know I started with a full tank, I can usually tell to within 5 miles how far I can go before I run out. I don't like to push it nearly that far, but I must admit I have run out twice within rolling distance of the gas station; first time I coasted in, second I had to push her a bit to get up to the pump (yes, she's heavy!).

When it says I have zero miles left, I have a little over 2-1/2 gallons left. Typically, I can go at least 50 miles on that, but I limit myself to more like 30; just to be safe.

I really don't understand why people bother waiting until it says empty to fill up, lmao.

My gas gauge likes to play games with me. One day it's sitting at 1/4th tank. I leave it parked overnight, start it up, and bam. Gas tank is nearly empty, and the light is on. Start driving it, and what do you know, i'm at 1/8th tank.

For this reason, I always fill up at 1/4th tank. This leaves me plenty of room to get to a gas station incase the light comes up unexpectedly.

I know people who don't fill up until the light is on or the needle is hovering over empty, and they've run out of gas on occasion. I laugh my a$$ off at their stupidity. We're in San Francisco for god's sake, how the hell do you run out of gas when theres a station on damn nearly every corner.

Now maybe this is me, because I have a turbocharged motor. Which is why I'm super careful and take care of my car. I'd hate to run out of gas. I don't know if running out of gas damages your engine, but I think that running out of gas would cause your engine to run quite lean for a few cycles? Running lean isn't exactly healthy for your motor guys.

But hey, maybe some of you like running out of gas for the sheer excitement of looking like an idiot having to push your car into a station.

In conclusion. This is 2012. Most, if not all cars have gas gauges.

Take a wild guess why there are there. Use them.
