I took my 2007 G35S 6MT with 88,000 miles to the dealership yesterday to check out my transmission issue. the transmission is grinding going into 5th gear and when I first start up the car in the morining its hard to go into 1st gear. The dealer told me that my clutch needs to be replaced but my clutch is not currently slipping. Does this sounds like a clutch slipping or do I have other issues going on with my transmission. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

When was the last time you changing transmission fluid?

Changing it with OEM fluid may solve your problem. Some people go with royal purple for good result.

 

I changed my Transmission fluid about six months ago with synetic non OEM fluid, could this be the problem?

 

I am no expert on this, but from what I read, our transmission is picky on the type of fluid that it uses.

I would try to switch back to OEM fluid and see.

 

^ whs changing trans fluid should be the first step given it could be the most cheapest solution but stay with OEM Nissan MTF fluid to avoid grinding issues that some have with AM fluids. Do the ~35mph 6th gear test and if the clutch is not slipping then i doubt thats the issue. If you search on here you will see posts on people have grinding issues with AM fluid that went away after switching back to OEM

Change the fluid first and if that doesnt solve the problem it could be bad syncros.

 

If you are having problems getting into 1st gear, then it is most likely the clutch.

 

I'll add another vote for tranny fluid since you changed it recently with non-oem. My manual tranny is the only thing I put oem in because of long threads here on aftermarket issues.

 

Also check your clutch fluid condition, might be time to flush that out if its dark and murky which could also mean that there is air your system

 

Totally agree kool! I had my whole tranny replaced under warranty at 45k miles due to bad syncros when shifting from 4th into 5th as well as the 6th back down into 5th. It appeared much earlier that 45K, and slowly got progressively worse. I finally took it in just before my factory warranty (time) ran out. The replacement tranny has been in for 25K miles now and is still shifting just fine. When I change fluid in it, I will use the factory Nissan juice or the super duper MotorCraft fully synthetic tranny lube that's supposed to be the bees knees.

BTW, the reason I'm not thinking it's clutch is because he's not reporting that he's grinding other gears.

 

What SPECIFICALLY (brand, type , and weight) did you use in it? Also, was it GL4 or GL5 rated.

 

Thanks for the wealth of knowledge on what could be the problem. I will first change the tranny fluid this weekend and see if that fixes the problem and then try the 6th gear slipping test. I can tell you it only grinds going into 5th gear and no other gear, it's only hard to go into 1st gear first thing in the morning when I first fire the car up, during the rest of the day no issues. I still have a bottle of the replace fluid left, I will check the SPECS on it. Again thanks for the information, being in the Military limits spending $2400 to have the clutch replaced by the dealer.

I also had to get my transmission replaced because of grinding going into 5th gear (bad synchros). I did change the transmission fluid first, but it didn't help. Luckily I was still under warranty for the transmission replacement.
