Replace my cat converter with something else?

Ok so I have come to terms that my cat conver will need to be replaced eventually. The engine light comes and goes as it feels. I was wondering since I'm going to be paying 2k+ on new converters I mine as well as pay around the same for a whole new exhaust system. I was wondering if anybody knew where I can get a whole new system with the cat converters. Please post links for where I can order something.*

CAR INFO:
Car Type- Infiniti*
Car Model- G35X
Car Year- 2007
Engine Size- 3.5L v6

Stock single split exhaust is on it as of now. Also I live in Canada Alberta so I don't need that mumble jumble California emmisions catalytic converter bull. And one last thing while I'm here talking about getting 19" wheels and I was wondering if it would work on my car and if anybody knew a place where I can get them and how much a lowering kit would cost so my car doesn't look like a 4x4. Thanks guys

Corbin, this website has answers to every one of your questions. As a new member you need to spend some time reading through the forum, especially the sub-forum we're in and educate yourself about your car. Think of this as a marathon and not a sprint, it'll take you some time to do so but you'll be way more educated about your ride than you are now.

Also, the search function can be helpful (I prefer Google) in helping you find the answers you seek to the questions you've asked. Not sure what's caused your stress but you're in the right place to learn more about your car. We don't mind helping out now and then, but we're not going to spoon feed you. Gotta do some of the work yourself, nomsayin?

Corbin, what makes you think your converters are wasted? Is she throwing an error code that indicates that's the issue? (what code?) Have a shop/dealership check em before you spend the $$ to have them replaced. The exhaust sensors code gets confused with the converters, they're not expensive. Like Tim....^....advised, educate yourself about your car by spending time here on Driver reading everything possible, stickys are a good place to start.

The thing is. I have searched this forum for everything i can. Im not 100% use to it as of now. But im slowly getting there. I have done my research on converters and the thing is that the o2 sensers may have crapped out but wil infiniti g35x that are 07+ the sensors are embedded into the converters. So i will have to go to the dealership to get new catalytic converters and they are charging $600 ea and my infiniti has 4. So that repair is 2400 minimum. So mine as well get a whole new system with a cat delete already installed for 1300-1900

Just have them replace the O2 sensor on the affected side. You do not need to replace the cat if the sensor goes.

Uhhhhhh yes you do. If sensor goes bad you buy the whole thing. I already called about that.

So how come you can buy either the upstream or downstream O2 sensors discretely for them then?

I don't know what stream your talking about. I needed a new sensor for the oem cats b/c I stripped it when trying to take it off. Called the dealers for a new one and they said I had to but the oem cats and the sensor

With any infiniti that is 07 and up the o2 sensors are built into the cat converters. With any model 06 and down all they did was put a sensor before and after the converter. So if you have a newer model of infiniti the only way to even look at the o2 sensors you have to cut the cat in half which completely destroys the converter. So that's why I'm thinking about getting a new exhaust system with hi-flow cats because its cheaper than getting the new cats because they are $1100-1400 each from the dealership.

Sorry I didn't get back to you Gary. The reason why my cats are done is because the check engine light turned on so I took it in and it said that my o2 sensors are done and I've kinda noticed it when I step on it because gear two will rev up to 8000-8500 rpm amd my redline is at 7500. So this means my o2 sensors are saying I need more fuel on the ratio of fuel to oxygen to carbondioxide ratio when I really don't. Its not an immediate fix but its something I need to look into in the near feature.

So If I decide to go with BERK or FI HFCs I must buy new 02 sensors to go into the HFCs once I remove the stock cats? I thought they just break free and screw out of the stock cats? At least that's what it looks like on the BERK DIY install video on YouTube. That would be a PITA to have to buy both brand new 02 sensors on top of the HFCs..

Then you clearly don't now much about O2 sensors.

Again, I shocked! You mean your dealer tried to sell you as much as possible and you believed it.

I guess I don't get this.

I just looked at RockAuto and they list several brands of replacement O2 sensors for the car. I then called up my local dealership and asked for pricing and availability on the sensors and the cats. They said they had both upstream and downstream sensors available seperately AND they were in stock! They did indeed show that the cats listed around 1100 (less a 140 refund with the old core), but said they don't stock them and almost never sell them; for them it's pretty much just the sensors.

aka: "lean"

SO, this is what typically happens when an O2 sensor goes bad; they generally fail toward an overly lean reading. The problem this causes is that the ecu compensates by dumping more fuel (trying to get a richer mix), which then can overwhelm the cats because they have to burn off all the unused fuel. Bottom line, if left unchecked, a failed O2 sensor can definitely cause the cat to fail, but unless that's happened already, there's a good chance replacing the sensor can take care of your problems.

I think this is just some bad info that's bouncing around in this thread.
