Grease bomb exploded in my front wheel well (PICS)

Changed oil today and noticed think think grease all inside the right front wheel..like a little bomb went off. Called my mechanic and he said by sounds of it the boot is cracked or what not. Sounds like to him the easiest fix is to replace the right front axle...is this true? I really can't find a hole in the boot and it seems on pretty tight

most likely a tear in the boot. had the same problem on my jetta, never found the rip. I would clean it up and sure enough a few days later the mess was there again. if your cv isnt worn to be replaced just do the boot. my .02

I'm not sure if this is a dealer only part but usually autoparts stores carry rebuilt ones which are made to OE specs.

I'd shy away from a junkyard part.

.
I'd tend to agree with this. Given that the part has a significant amount of labor associated with changing it, it just doesn't seem worth the risk to put a part that's less than 100% in there (unless you're flat busted broke or get your labor for free).

I get labor for very VERY cheap. And yes money is tight these days.

Dealer only

If the boot has just torn, and you replace it in time, you should be ok.

Usually the failure occurs when the grease slings out, water and dirt get in and begin to grind away inside the joint.

Yours looks pretty fresh, so you might make out.

Www.rockauto.com does have a rebuild/return service on it for $68.
